Coffee Beans

Most Arabica coffee beans originate from one of three growing regions;

1) Central America,
2) East Africa/Arabia
3) Asia/Pacific.

Beans from different countries or regions usually have distinctive characteristics such as :

1) flavor (flavor criteria include terms such as "citrus-like" or "earthy")
2) aroma (sometimes "berry-like" or "flowery")
3) body or mouth feel
4) acidity

Robusta coffee

Robusta coffee is the main species planted in Sabah.

However, large areas of Uberica are grown in southeast in the Tawau district.

Both these coffee varieties are planted In Sabah because they are more suitably planted in the lowlands where the temperature is between 24ø C and 30ø C.

Acidity refers to a tangy or clean-tasting quality, typically present in washed or wet processed coffees. It does not refer to a coffee's pH level. (Black coffee has a pH of around 5).

These distinguishing taste characteristics are dependent not only on the coffee's growing region, but also on its method of process and genetic subspecies or varietals.

"Caracoli," also known as pea berry, is a coffee bean which develops singly inside the coffee cherry, which normally contains two. The Caracoli beans occur in all regions of the world, on all types of coffee bush (~4% of all beans). Since flavor is concentrated when only a single bean is grown inside the cherry, Caracoli beans (especially Arabica) are highly prized.

TENOM COFFEE

Tenom is known for its coffee product, visitors can buy coffee powder grinded using a small machine when you order.

Coffee was planted In Sabah in the late 1800s. It was then planted mainly in the east coast of Sabah. In Sepilok, coffee was planted in the nearby forest reserve near the mangroves. The plantation was abandoned in 1910 due to an outbreak of disease.

The Tenom district is famous for its coffee. The locally famous coffee' is a variety of coffee, Tenom Robusta.

History of coffee

Persian armies in the 6th century probably carried coffee seeds to the Arabian Peninsula WHERE the Arabs brewed the bitter seeds into a drink. By the 17th century, so much coffee was passing through the Arabian port of Mocha that mocha became another name for coffee.

Arabica coffees were traditionally named by the port they were exported from, the two oldest being :
1) Mocha from Yemen
2) Java from Indonesia

The modern coffee trade is much more specific about origin, labeling coffees by country, region, and sometimes even the producing estate. Varietals is a botanical term denoting a taxonomic category ranking below species, a designation more specific than Arabica or Robusta and unrelated to the coffee's place of origin.

Coffees consisting entirely of beans from a single varietals, bourbon, for example, are generally referred to as such, along with a reference to their place of origin (as in: Rwanda Blue Bourbon). Coffee aficionados may even distinguish auctioned coffees by lot number.

When coffee was first introduced in Europe in 1615, some people thought that it was intoxicating and even poisonous. But gradually, coffee was accepted by the public.

During the 18th century, coffee culture spread to Asia and the Americas. The Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia, dominated the world market for nearly a century. Brazil then took over as the number one producer and has for many decades. Other leading coffee producers are Colombia, Mexico and Indonesia.

Coffee is a beverage made from the roasted seed of coffee plant. Most of the world's coffee today comes from a plant called Coffea Arabica (Arabian coffee plant)

Coffee contains caffeine, a natural stimulant that makes you unable to sleep well after a cup of coffee. You can get decaffeinated coffee to enjoy the test of coffee but without the stimulating caffeine.

Coffee is one of the world's most most popular beverages and most-traded commodity in the world, after oil. Coffee has several classifications used to determine environmental and QC standards.
