Portrait Painters in Chiang Mai's Night Bazaar

Chiang Mai’s Night Bazaar is a city attractions because it is a good place to purchase cheap goodies and a lot of gifts and great souvenirs. One of the most memorable souvenirs is to get your portrait sketched by talented artists for a  reasonable price.

Thailand is a land of artists. When strolling the cities you will notice many artists offering to paint your portrait. They scattered all over the place. However the best of them are in the Vieng Ping Night Bazaar Building. It is interesting to see how meticulously they paint the charcoal portraits right on site.

Some painters offer very low prices, but beware because most likely they didn’t go to art school or have just started their art school education, so when they have finished a painting job the quality is lacking and it is hard to refuse to pay for the work when it’s finished.

The majority of the artists are recognizable by their long hair and more casual way of behavior.

The influx of Thai artists and Western expatriates has turned the quiet Chiang Mai City into a vibrant toure destination. Design studios sprung up fusing traditional Thai with modern twists.

The area around Nimanhaemin Road packed with Art Deco homes, alongside contemporary art galleries run by young Thais with purple hair and nose rings.

Thailand’s best artists have moved to Chiang Mai from Bangkok.

Several have won global recognition:

  • Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, a performance artist who reads poetry to corpses, was featured at the 2006 Venice Biennale.
  • Navin Rawanchaikul, who paints cartoonlike murals inside taxis and tuk-tuks, has exhibited his work at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in New York. For emerging talents, visit La Luna Gallery at 190 Charoen Raj Road; 66-53-306-678; www.lalunagallery.com

The reproductions the artists make are usually brilliant pieces of art.

Or, you can simply sit there and pose for a few hours.

The subjects they paint vary from tribal people, photos of famous pop stars to award winning photographs like National Geographic's Afghan girl with the piercing green eyes  which has been sketched the world over ever since!
