SM Teknik Tawau's eight consecutive 100 per cent SPM passes

31 March, 2006

31 March 2006 Tawau: SM Teknik Tawau (SMTT) scored 100 per cent passes in the Technical Stream in the 2005 SPM examination for the eighth consecutive year.

Overall improvement in the quality of results makes it the best among the technical schools in Sabah and Labuan Federal Territory. However, the Vocational Stream recorded a slight drop with 99.3 per cent passes. A total of 538 students sat for the examination.

All the students were feted to a grand 6th Convocation Assembly at the school's Dewan Tun Ahmadshah after the results were released by the State Education Department.

Top SPM students stole the limelight at the function graced by the Patron of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Datuk Dr Chua Soon Bui.

She was given the honour to present graduation scrolls to the school-leavers.

Best technical student, Felicia Fong Sheau Jing (Food Technology) secured 10As, followed by Hazlia Fardila Kichi (Civil Engineering) who scored 9As and Chung Ming Choon (Mechanical Engineering) with 7As.

Mohd Zulhilmi Saipudin from the Automotive Course emerged as the best vocational student with 6As to his credit.

Felicia and Mohd Zulhilmi received the Super Principal's Excellence Award in the form of a trophy.

That is only half the story. All students who scored 6As and above were rewarded with attractive cash prizes by the PTA. And Chua, a former Member of Parliament for Tawau, topped it all with generous gifts of gold lockets.

Super Principal Mary Yap Kain Ching described the students' achievement as yet another milestone for the school.

"I would not hesitate to acknowledge the hard work put in by the teachers. Neither would I trivialise the role of the parents who had rendered their co-operation," she said.

The combined effort, she added, had ensured the success of all students, even the weaker ones.

According to Yap, a sizeable number of students joined SMTT with the minimum qualification of 'D' in the core subjects after completing their PMR examination in other schools in 2003.

"Although we (SMTT) don't get the cream of PMR graduates as some other schools, we manage to change their attitude towards studies as proven by last year's group and those of previous years.

Put simply, their desire to learn and the commitment of teachers has paid off," she said.
