Vegetable Garden near Tawau old airport

The vegetable plots at the old airport grounds are main mostly by migrant farmers. The plots have existed for after the airport was moved to Balung new airport in 2001. By now the gardens have grown into a stretch of more than a kilometer along Jalan Utara.

The land belonged to the government. These immigrant farmers might gain citizenship after a number of years and could eventually claim compensation or even rights to this old airport land which seem to be no man's land.

After the airport moved to Balung in 2001, the Civil Aviation Department handed this old land back to Sabah Government through the Tawau council. This garden land now come under the jurisdiction of the Tawau Municipal Council.
