Tawau hosted the 2011 International Invitational Nusantara Silat Festival 15th to 19th May, 2011.

The festival is jointly organized by the National Silat Federation of Malaysia Sabah (Sabah PESAKA), Tawau Municipal Council and the Community College of Tawau in collaboration with the Malaysian National Silat Federation (PESAKA MALAYSIA).  The festival director is Zaid Abd Hamid.

This is held in Borneo for the first time with 250 silat exponents including judges and organizing members from Malaysia and Singapore gathered in Tawau.

There are total 18 teams from universities, private institutions, colleges including teams from Singapore.

The inaugural event was held in Borneo for the first time with support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Sabah.

Silat matches were held in two rings A and B in Tawau Community Hall.

Silat is an art of self defend, a form of moral and discipline, a life style of building confident self-esteem and a social bond of brotherhood among the practitioners. Most important is the element of discipline in the martial itself.

Silat is an martial art of Malay archipelago, one of the several Martial Arts of Asia. Asia has a cultural wealth of Martial Arts like Japanese's Akido Karate, Korea's Taekwondo, China's Shaolin Kungfu, India's Kalaripayat, and Thailand's Siam tomoi.

A Silat Court will be built in the village of Hang Tuah, Melaka. This court make Malaysia the international center of Silat Art.

The silat festival comprises two categories,
1) Silat Olahraga (combat)
2) Silat seni (artistic).

25 new Tawau councillors (9 new faces) sworn in
 

On Wednesday March 10, 2010 a total of 25 new councillors, including nine new faces, were sworn in for the 2010-2011 term in a ceremony witnessed by Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) President, Ismail Mayakob, at Dewan Sri Tawau.

The new nine faces are Tsang Ye Pin, Yap Kin Vun, Lo Khyun Thian, Tong Yun Fah, Alai Illahibaskh, Syed Ali Syed Abas, Shamsul Alam Bawa Omar, Sarman Amat Simito and Halimah Yahya.

Also present were MPT Deputy President Tai Yun Wu and Secretary Aftar Nurajat.

24 - 25 April 2010 17th Regatta Lepa, Semporna (Saturday and Sunday)

Semporna Town came to life with the unique Regatta Lepa, a competition held for the Bajau seafarers to crown the most beautiful traditional sailboat.

For two days beginning April 24, the sea gypsies of Sabah extended an invitation to the very cultural heart of the Bajau community and the Regatta Lepa that showcases their unique wooden boats ‘Lepa’.

The latest Anglican Vision School located at Mile 10, Apas road, in Bandar Sri Indah is an effort by the church to complement the Government's aspiration to provide education for youngsters in Sabah.

The Education Ministry approved the school with the certificate of registration issued on May 15, 2009

The school will be preparing students in the UPSR, PMR and SPM examinations.

Plans are under way to prepare students for the STPM examinations in the near future.

The Vision School is wholly owned by the Anglican Diocese of. Sabah and managed by the Board of Directors in St. Patrick's. Anglican Church, Tawau.

Influenza  H1N1 in Tawau

Classes in Tawau, Semporna and Kunak were suspended for a week starting 31 July 2009 to 7th August 2009.

The schools were nine in Tawau and one each in Semporna and Kunak.

This is the single largest closure of schools within a day in Sabah.

Malaysia reported its first influenza A(H1N1) case on 15 May 2009. It started with a 21 years old male student who returned to Malaysia from United States on Wednesday, 13th May 2009.

Among the symptoms of A(H1N1) are as coughing, having difficulty in breathing, body aches, headache and sore throat.

By 1st July 2009,  Tawau Municipal Council will turn dirty Tawau into a "clean city".

Starting 1st January 2009, Tawau Municipal Council organized various anti-litterbug campaigns including placing 83 rubbish bins in various strategic locations and putting up warning posters at road junctions and roundabouts as well as public toilets in Tawau.

Several anti-litterbug enforcement officers would also be stationed around the city to ensure the public observe the warnings.

Tawau Council is serious on tackling the issue of rubbish in Tawau. Individuals found discarding rubbish indiscriminately, including cigarette butts, would be brought to court and face a maximum fine of RM5,000.

Stickers also placed on taxis and buses to warn passengers that they could be fined for littering.

Tan Sri Lau Gek Poh, PSM, SPDK, PGDK

Tan Sri Lau Gek Poh, Well-known philanthropist and industrialist, passed away in Kuala Lumpur on 4th April 2008.

Lau Gek Poh, who hailed from Tawau, died of old age of 92 at  Kuala Lumpur General Hospital and burial on 14th April 2008 in Tawau Town.

Lau' is the founder of Hap Seng Group of Companies which mainly involved in the timber business in 1970s and with his vision, Hap Seng company soon branched into other fields such as property development and agriculture.

His success in business did not made him forget society as he donated generously to schools, religious bodies and victims of tragedies, both locally and abroad.   More about Lau Gek Poh...

A total of 16 cultural associations in Tawau District took part in the second annual Tawau Cultural Carnival. The two-day carnival (March 24-25, 2007) drew thousands to witness cultural performances by ethnics groups at the town padang in Tawau.


Demonstrations on traditional dances were performed by various cultural associations such as the Chinese, Indian, Suluk, Bajau, Murut, Lundayeh, Kadazandusun, Tidung, Bolongan, Banjar, Kokos, Bugis, Timor, Toraja, Jawa and Iban.

Various exhibition stalls were set up displaying local handicrafts. A number of government agencies and departments also took part in the carnival.

Other highlights included a singing contest, a concert and a tug-of-war competition.

The main objective of holding the carnival is to give an opportunity to all cultural associations in Tawau to highlight their own culture as well as to introduce their handicrafts to the public and tourists.

Tawau Tourism agencies are fostering  close co-operation with Sabah Tourism Board (STB), local authorities, hoteliers and air transportation companies to ensure the tourism industry in Tawau district remains competitive.  Lack of co-operation may result in Tawau being left behind in tourism promotion in Sabah.

Tawau district have many attractions in the Eastern part of Sabah. The district is well-known for its seafood which can actually be promoted further. There are other types of food products that have great potential to attract tourists when promoted.

Sabah Tourism Board (STB) has launched a comprehensive promotion package for places of attraction in Sabah including Tawau, Lahad Datu, Kunak and Semporna. Malaysia is now competing against 200 other countries and 1,000 tourism destinations throughout the world.
