Influenza H1N1 in Tawau

The epidermic has spread to this samll town in June 2009. More and more confirmed cases and suspected victims of this virus.

In TAWAU district, 16 cases of H1N1 have been recorded in the district as on 31 July 2009

The symptoms of Influenza H1N1 in Tawau

The symptoms of H1N1 (swine) flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with H1N1 (swine) flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with H1N1 (swine) flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, H1N1 (swine) flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

In children emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

Fast breathing or trouble breathing
Bluish or gray skin color
Not drinking enough fluids
Severe or persistent vomiting
Not waking up or not interacting
Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
Sudden dizziness
Confusion
Severe or persistent vomiting
Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
I can't exactly comment on this as I am cautious and scared at the same time due to the chaos made by people around me. As we can see, it's getting more and more serious though we see that few friends of mine recovered. But hey still !


WHAT TO DO... ?
1	Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze.
2	Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
3	Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
4	Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
5	If you are sick with a flu-like illness, stay home for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer, except to seek medical care or for other necessities.
6	Keep away from other household members as much as possible. This is to keep you from infecting others and spreading the virus further.
7	If you are sick and sharing a common space, wear a facemask.
8	Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds, and other social distancing measures.
9	If you don’t have one yet, consider developing a family emergency plan as a precaution. This should include storing a supply of extra food, medicines, and other essential supplies.

	Tawau General Hospital 1924

General Hospital Tawau 1924 - A small public hospital close to the shore with no medical officer.

A medical doctor Ernst Sternfeld was sent from Sandakan to Tawau between 1939-1940 for only a few months.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu
