The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation established its first office in Penabg,  Malaysia in 1884.

It added offices in Malacca (1909) and in Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur in 1910. In 1947 when it proceeded to include branches in Sabah and Sarawak, including Kota Kinabalu (1947), Sandakan and Tawau, both in 1948, Labuan (1957), Beaufort (1961), and Papar (1962). In 1959,

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation acquired the Mercantile Bank, and with it Mercantile Bank's branches in Malaysia, which resulted in a quantum jump in the number of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation's branches in Malaysia.
