A shower of flowers fell from a
hovering helicopter while hundreds of balloons
floated into the air with 100,000 ethnic Indian Hindus watched
during the opening ceremony on 29 January 2006 6.15pm. Works Minister S. Samy Vellu, Malaysia's top Indian politician,
conducted the official unveiling of the statue.
World Tallest Lord
"This is the tallest statue of a Hindu deity in Malaysia,"
said temple Chairman R. Nadarajah. "It is also the tallest
Lord Murugan statue in the world. We are trying to get it
reported in the Guinness Book of World Records."
The statue is 42.7meters.

golden statue entered Malaysian Book
of Records as the tallest statue of a Hindu deity in Malaysia.

more than three years to build.

Malaysian Hindus regard Lord Murugan as a manifestation of
valor, beauty, youthfulness, vitality, masculinity and
Batu Caves consists of three main caves and several smaller ones. Temple Cave
or Cathedral Cave is the best known and biggest one. The ceiling is 100 meters
above ground and this huge chamber is lit by daylight from several holes in the
ceiling. Temple Cave features a Shrine to Lord Subramaniam, a Hindu deity which
is visited by many devotees throughout the year.
Batu Caves is 13
Kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur .
The signature feature of this Hindu cave temple is the 272 steps staircase
that leads to the cave. The cave is the temple for Hindu God Lord Muruga,
also known as Lord Subramaniam.
A tall golden statue of lord Muruga is standing
next to the staircase to welcome visitors. It is the tallest statue of lord
Muruga in the world.
This oldest Hindu
temple in Kuala Lumpur was started in 1873 by
the Pillai family as a private shrine. In the
late 1920s the Pillai family open the temple
doors to the public and eventually handed the
management over to a board of trustees. The
initial temple structure was build in attap and
gone through structural upgrade throughout the
years. The current temple building completed in
1968. The impressive gateway to the temple (the
gopuram) was completed in 1972. The new temple
was consecrated in 1973.
