LKIM plans fish complexes in Tawau, S'kan

Tawau: The Fisheries Development Board of Malaysia (LKIM) plans to set up fish landing complexes in Tawau and Sandakan under the 9th Malaysia Plan, at a total estimated cost of RM50 million.

LKIM Deputy Director Mohd Noor Hassan said each complex would require 20 to 30 acres.

He said this during a visit to the feasible site at Indra Sabah, near here, Sunday.

According to him, a formal application to the Government would be made following land acquisition.

The projects would include a wholesale market as well as a fish market.

Mohd Noor also visited the sea shell-rearing project at Indra Sabah, accompanied by Deputy Rural Development Minister Datuk Tawfig Abu Bakar Titingan.

Meanwhile, LKIM Chairman Adam Abdul Hamid visited the proposed site for a similar project, in Sandakan, on Monday.

According to a Sandakan Fishermen Association spokesman, Adam will also be briefed on the progress of the fishing industry at the Tanjung Aru fishing village before attending the annual general meeting of the Beluran Fishermen Association today (Wednesday).

On July 7, the party will also visit the Borneo Aqua Harvest Marine Hatchery Centre at Kg Sungai Kayu in Sandakan.
