Three palm oil mills fined for polluting rivers

KOTA KINABALU: Three palm oil processing mills in the east coast district of Tawau have been fined RM20,000 each for polluting rivers.

Representatives of TSH Resources Bhd, Borneo Samudera Sdn Bhd and Tong Len Plantation Sdn Bhd pleaded guilty yesterday to excessively discharging their mills’ effluent into rivers between June 25 and July 23 last year.

The three firms were charged in the Tawau Sessions Court on May 11 under the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

Sabah Department of Environment director Halimah Hassan said in a statement that DOE officers collected river samples which showed that the waste discharged by the mills was above permissible levels.
