A day of consecration to Lord Murugan

 


 

Drums beat out trance-inducing rhythms. Long wooden pipes, the nathaswaram, croon devotional tunes in an carnival atmosphere.

In the temple of Lord  Murugan - the protector of the innocent - stood august and majestic in the inner sanctum, arms akimbo. An endless flow of milk cascaded from his crown and down his polished ebony image amid an air wafting with chants, music and heavy sandalwood incense.

Annual Hindu festival THAIPUSAM  draws  large gathering in multi-racial Malaysia. In Tawau, the festival is celebrated on a mammoth scale at THIRUMURUGAN  TEMPLE  locate beside the army camp.

Thaipusam  commemorates the day  goddess Parvathi, gives her son, Murugan, to vanquish three demons and their large army which were plaguing the world.

Thaipusam falls on a full moon day in the auspicious 10th Tamil month of Thai when the constellation of Pusam, the star of well-being, rises over the eastern horizon.


Thaipusam  was brought to the Malaysia through the South Indian diaspora during the 19th century. The festival has since evolved and grown so greatly in Malaysia and Singapore that it has now far outsized celebrations, mostly unheard of, even in India.

诡秘的节日 - 印度教大宝森节Thaipusam

印度教的「大宝森节 Thaipusam」大多落在每年公历的1、2月间,是虔诚的印度教徒赎罪、奉献及感恩的时节。
据说在印度本土已经看不到了, 现在依旧保留这个风俗的是新加坡和马来西亚. 和其他具有欢乐气氛的印度节日不同,大宝森节是个忏悔和实践诺言的节日。 信徒们会用铁钉及钩子穿过身体,背起巨大的钢制弓形枷锁(Kavadis),从一座印度神庙游行到另一座印度神庙,全程约4 - 5 公里,进行祷告及献祭,借此表示对 Murugan 神忠贞不移的信仰,并祈求神明赐福。

关於这个节庆的起源有多种传说,流传最广的说法是姆鲁卡神
Lord Murugan 在这一天从他的父亲奇瓦大帝 Lord Shiva 手中承接大统。奇瓦大帝的门徒之一 Ibumban 则在此时受到了一个神秘声音的指示,要他登上一座名为 Pazhani 的高山。Ibumban 与其随从们便以肩挑了两端榜上牛奶罐的棍子,一步步登上山顶。为了忘掉登高的劳苦,他们便一路唱着赞美姆鲁卡神的曲子。自此以后 Murugan 神表示凡是肩扛铁架、携带牛奶及花束至他的殿堂的信徒,即可获得庇祐。 这些乐曲与肩担牛奶罐的仪式後来便被称作卡瓦第 Kavadi,意思是行动祭坛。

要参与这样一个庄严的庆典,忏悔者必须在1个月前开始准备,严守戒律、禁欲并吃素。在进行背负卡瓦第仪式前,所有忏悔者必须接受寺庙祭司的训诫,并进行24小时的斋戒以便为这崇高的节日净化肉体与灵魂,而他们相信在仪式进行时姆鲁卡神会与他们同在,使他们完全毫无疼痛的感受。

印度教徒近乎自残的行為,却丝毫不觉痛苦的神奇現象令人匪夷所思,他们身上非但不会流血,事后也不会留下任何疤痕,印度教徒將此视为神绩的表現。
