October 2007 , Tawau Golf Club
celebrated its 40th Anniversary in conjunction with the grand opening of the
clubhouse at their Tawau Hot Spring Golf Course. Now offering 27 holes of
championship golf, comprised of is original 9-hole layout situated near the
city's downtown and a dramatic, mountain 18-hole layout, this club has much to
be proud of.
"Because we needed a bigger golf course for the people in Tawau, this beautiful
345-acre piece of rain forest land was given to Tawau Golf Club in 1982 by Datuk
Harris Mohd Salleh, when he was then the Chief Minister of Sabah, and we can
never thank him enough for what we have today. Building the par-72 Hot Spring
Golf Course was not an easy task. We embarked on our own in-house design by a
group of dedicated committee members, but we were lucky to have the full
support, contributions and donations made by the club members, totalling RM1.8
million to realise our project," said club president, Datuk James Pang. "We
started building the first nine holes in January 1996 and it was completed in
May 1999. The second nine was completed in July 2001 and was opened for play
immediately. In all, we spent just over RM6 million. On average, each hole cost
us around RM366,000."
During the commemorative golf tournament, that highlighted the two days of
special events and evening celebrations, a lost golf ball record was sent when
an estimated 600 tiny round spheres went missing. Not all the scores were high,
however, as plantation owner Raymond Yee carded a course record 73 to win the
Gross title for a field of more than 246 players. The 41-year-old, who plays to
an 8-handicap said he had fun playing on the tough layout.
"I am very happy and I don't know what to say except only that, everything just
came in and every shot I did just came in. I don't know why. All I know is that
shooting a 73 on this course is an excellent score. Maybe it has to do with my
flight mates. My friend, he shot gross 77. I was having fun competing with him,
we were going practically neck-to-neck at every hole," said Yee.
