On April 2, 2014 a woman tourist from China and a female resort worker were
abducted by a group of seven armed men from the Singamata Resort in Semporna.
On May 6, 2014 early morning, a group of armed men abducted a Chinese national, Yang Zai Lin, 34, the manager of a fish-breeding project in Pulau Baik, located about 23km from Lahad Datu town. This abduction incident was the third within a period of seven months.
In November 2013, a Taiwanese tourist was shot dead while his companion was abducted by a group of men in an incident at Pulau Pom Pom, Semporna.
The Sabah Esscom (East Coast Security Command) and Esszone (East Sabah Security Zone) were set up in locations which were identified as security risk areas.
Following the incidences of encroachment into Malaysian waters and previous abductions, Malaysian government has issued on the need to beef up assets and use radar systems to monitor movements in East Sabah.

"special food" from town on her birthday on April 8, 2014.
The gunmen also allowed Gao to call her family in Shanghai and Dayawan had to translate the conversation to the gunmen.
They were held by a group of gunmen led by an Alhabsi Misaya, in the jungles of Indanan on Jolo island. The gunmen called their leader Misaya and sometimes Maas (elder).

Dayawan was working at the Singamata Reef Resort near Semporna, where Gao Huayun was staying as a tourist on April 2, 2014, when five gunmen abducted them and spirited them to Jolo island using high-powered speedboats.
While in captivity at the gunmen's mountainous hideout, Dayawan served as Gao's caretaker, attending to her needs. The gunmen did not harm them in any way, but they were constantly guarded by two armed men.
Gao and Dayawan survived almost two months of captivity in the mountainous jungle hideout of Jolo island in the southern Philippines.
The two women were eventually released on May 30, 2014 to Malaysian security officials. Malaysian and Philippines officials have both said no ransom was paid for the women's release.
After rescued, Marcy Dayawan had returned home to her native Midsayap town in North Cotobato in Mindanao island.

They were held hostage for nearly two months in southern Philippines has left for China.
The 29-year-old Gao Hua Yuan was flown to Kuala Lumpur where she is expected to connect a flight back to her home country.
Gao and Marcy Dawayan, 40, another hostage from the Philippines, were rescued in a joint operation between the Malaysian and Philippine authorities yesterday.
They were saved from the Jolo Islands at about 10.30am before being sent to Sandakan. Gao was flown here late last night before she took the morning flight to Kuala Lumpur.
For nearly two months the two hostages were moved from one location to the other in the Jolo Islands by their captors before they were rescued in the joint operations.
No ransom was paid for their release and attributed the success to the cooperation between the Malaysian and Philippine authorities.
