Some 4,000 residents of Kalabakan are expected to benefit from the RM32 million solar energy and fresh water supply project in the area.

Kalabakan Member of Parliament Datuk Abdul Ghapur Salleh said the RM20 million solar hybrid project which is under Rural and Regional Development Ministry was progressing well.

He said allocation for the mini water supply plant worth RM12 million had been approved by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak through Felda and work would to start in three to four months by the appointed contractor and is expected to be ready by end of next year.

For the record, residents in Kalabakan, which is located about 100 kilometers from Tawau, have been using generator sets to power electricity to their homes and rain or river water for their daily need.

Ghapur, who is also Kalabakan Umno divisional chief, said this after simultaneously opening the Umno branch annual meetings for the Kalabakan, Brumas and Luasong zones yesterday.

Besides that, Ghapur said 500 houses of the poor and less fortunate in the parliamentary constituency which includes Merotai, Tanjung Batu and Sebatik would be given aid to repair their homes. He said a RM7.5 million allocation from Felda had already been approved and that repair works would be carried out soon.

“We will provide home owners with material such as wood planks, zinc, nails and such, worth between RM10,000 to RM15,000. This is the first such project using this approach in Malaysia and this is the privilege given to parliamentary constituencies with Felda estates,” he said.

On residents’ request to have Form 4 and 5 classes in SMK Kalabakan, Ghapur assured it may be realized early next year.
