KEDAH

Bujang Valley

The site covers an area of 224 Sq km. One of the most prominent historical sites in Malaysia, Lembah Bujang (Bujang Valley), which lies west of the town of Sungai Petani, was once the centre of a flourishing Hindu-Buddhist civilization dating back to the 5th century AD. A kingdom that practiced trade relations with old empires of India, Cambodia and Srivijaya, Lembah Bujang and was even visited by the Chinese monk I-Tsing in 671 AD.  

Langkawi Island  

Langkawi is a group of islands located on the north- western shore of Peninsular Malaysia. Captive imaginations are brought forth by the island's rich heritage of myths and legends. From ogres and gigantic birds; valiant warriors and fairy princesses; fierce battles and romances and the curse of an innocent maiden, among others, transcend down from generations making Langkawi a spellbinding tourist destination.  

Balai Besar Museum  

Opening Hours: By appointment Located near the town square of Alor Setar, the Balai Besar (Audience Hall), which was completed in 1898 was first used for the Sultan's installation and as an audience hall for receiving visitors. At a glance, the Balai Besar appears to have Thai influence in its architecture, but upon closer inspection, you can see a distinctly colonial touch, with tall supporting pillars and Victorian wrought-iron designs, resulting in an interesting blend of architectural design. Today, Balai Besar is still used for royal ceremonies and state functions.

Zahir Mosqne  

Open in^ Hours: 24 hours daily Facing the Balai Besar is the Zahir Mosque, which is one of the oldest mosques in the country. It was completed in 1912 and has a distinctively Moorish architecture, with a main dome and several smaller domes surrounded by minarets.  

Pekan Rabu Bazaar  

Literally means "Wednesday Market", Pekan Rabu is well-known among local and foreign tourists. It is located right in the middle of Alor Setar town. It was built in 1975 and renovated in 1995. It houses 347 stalls with a variety of business and it is a well- known landmark of Alor Setar.

 

Alor Setar Tower  

The Alor Setar Tower is the city's tallest landmark, a structure that stands out over the rest. Besides serving as a state-of-the-art telecommunications tower, it offers the public a chance to enjoy a panoramic view that stretches from Gunung Jerai (formerly known as Kedah Peak) to the Straits of Melaka.

Kota Kuala Kedah

Also known as Kota Kuala Bahang, the fort was originally constructed to provide protection against the Portuguese invaders, the Achenese from Sumatra and the Bugis. The fort was rebuilt in 1771 and was completed nine years later.  

Paddy Museum  

 

Located in Gunung Keriang, the museum showcases the development of cultivation methods, traditional planting equipment and different aspects of paddy cultivation.  

Mahsuri Mausoleum  

Makam Mahsuri (Mahsuri's Mausoleum) was built in honor of Mahsuri, a fair maiden who was unjustly accused of adultery more than 200 years ago. Legend has it that those conducting her execution had to use a special kris (Malay short dagger) as no ordinary kris could kill her.  

Ulu Muda Eco Park  

Opening Hours: Depends on travel package A remote and isolated forest in the far northern region of the Peninsular. The salt licks, in Sira Hangat and other sites, are some of the largest in Malaysia and offer very good opportunity to catch a glimpse of wildlife.  

Seven Wells  

Some believe that there were seven wells and others believe that it was originally one well containing seven sprints that would never dry even during droughts.

Underwater World Langkawi  

There are over 5000 fishes and other marine life which are exhibited in more than 117 specially designed tanks. Feeding times for the Tunnel Tank is at 3pm daily and 3.30pm for the Otter pond.

Dayang Bunting Island  

Shrouded in verdant tropical forest, Pulau Dayang Bunting is a must-stop for an island-hopping excursion around Langkawi. In the centre of the island, lies a large and beautiful lake called Tasik Dayang Bunting (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden), which is enclosed by forest covered hills.  

Sedim River  

The i5km Sungai Sedim has fast flowing waters and rapids excellent for whitewater sports-activities.  

Sungai Sedim Tree Top Walk  

Get an adrenaline rush by trying out the world's longest tree top walk. The walkway is 95om long and is 2,6m above the forest floor giving walkers a great view of the surroundings.  

Gunung Keriang Recreational Park  

Home to the Paddy Museum, this park also offers activities such as trekking, climbing, caving and even crystal hunting.  

Ulu Legong Hot Spring  

Located 22km from Baling, a nice hot dip is recommended when the temperature decrease at night. There is 5 natural hot springs at this location.  

Pedu Lake  

Pedu Lake is Kedah's newest tourist attraction. Among the recreational activities available here are fishing, water-skiing, swimming and picnicking.

Air Hangat Hot Spring  

The name is associated with an ancient legend of two feuding families who threw jugs, pots and pans at each other. One of the jugs, filled with boiling water, fell on the ground and immediately a hot spring gushed out of the spot where the village now stands.  

Padang Matsirat  

Padang Matsirat or the 'field of burnt rice' is the place where villagers torched the paddy fields to prevent Siamese invaders from getting the rice grains. The invasion of the Siamese army is said to tie to the curse placed on Langkawi made by the legendary Mahsuri before she died.  

Makam Purba (Ancient Grave)  

Makam Purba (Ancient Grave) is located in Hutan Buloh, an area surrounded by paddy fields in Mukim Ulu Melaka, Langkawi. Two graves, which are believed to have been there from centuries before, lies secluded from other graves in the area.  

Snake Sanctuary  

The Snake Sanctuary houses a wide variety of poisonous snakes found throughout Malaysia. This attraction in Langkawi is located about 12, km from town in the Tok Senik Resort in Ulu Melaka district.

Langkawi Bird Sanctuary  

Discover the exciting world of birds and nature at Langkawi's Birds Paradise. Some 3,500 birds from 150 species are housed here including some of the world's rarest and most beautiful birds.  

Payar Island

The protected marine park offers tourists the opportunity to see a variety of marine life. Visitors can spend the whole day swimming and snorkeling here.  

Mount Jerai

Standing majestically at 1,200 meters above sea level, it is the highest point in this northern part of the peninsular. Known previously as Kedah Peak, Gunung Jerai used to be a landmark for seafaring merchants of yester years.  

Complex Al - Bukhary  

A complex with beautiful Islamic architecture consisting of an orphanage, library, educational centre, mosque and hypermarket.  

Kelawar Cave  

One of several cave attractions in Langkawi Island, this 6om cave derived its name from the fruit bats. The trip to Gua Kelawar (Bat Cave) is a great way to enjoy Langkawi's natural beauty, as you will need to take a boat ride up Kilim River. The cave is located along one of the Kilim River tributaries.
