  1. The forest recreation centre, located strategically along the Lahad Datu-Tawau Highway, serves as an important rest-stop for long-haul travelers.

  2. The surrounding forest consists of various forest types; MDF, limestone vegetation and ultramafic vegetation. This interesting combination of various forest types can be exploited to educate locals on forest conservation. An well-managed environment education programme can be established for this purpose.

  • Area: 3,436.5 hectares
  • About 50km from Lahad Datu or about 15km from Kunak
  • Madai is basically a bird cave where the popular bird nest delicacy originates, while the Baturong Cave is riddled with several caverns containing ancient coffins
  • Madai Baturong Forest Reserve Nature Centre is classified as Class 1 forest reserve
