Dipterocarps are probably
the best known and studied tree family in Sabah! They are members of the
family Dipterocarpaceae. There are about 200 species of dipterocarps in
Sabah alone and there are found in almost all forest types and at
elevations up to 1,200 m.
The word 'dipterocarp' means 'two-winged fruit'. However, not all
dipterocarp trees have two-winged fruits. Some species have 3 or 5
'enlarged' fruit wings, or are without wings.
