The 1991 official statistics stated that the population of Papar is 59,473 and will increase to 140,978 by 2010.

Agriculture is the main economic activity of Papar mainly concentrated on paddy cultivation. No big plantations are found in Papar. Forestry is another economic activity with timber mills in Kimanis. Most of the timber resource comes from the interior such as Keningau.

Papar is dubbed ‘the Rice Bowl of Sabah’, the agricultural town of Papar is situated 38.5 kilometers from  Kota Kinabalu.

Journey from Kota Kinabalu to reach Papar takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour by car and 1 hour and 30 minutes by train.

The main attraction in Papar would be its tamu (Sunday market) which offers a wide variety of juicy local fruits, unique Sabahan handicrafts, fresh vegetables, fish, and many more.
