ELS Sdn. Bhd. signed its franchise agreement with ELS Inc. of USA, in July 1990, and by November of the same year, the first ELS Language Centres opened its doors in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, ELS Language Centres Malaysia is registered and approved by the Ministry of Education as an institute of higher learning (IPTS) and is accepted by the Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad (PSMB) as a training centre. It has also gained the approval of the Malaysian Government to recruit and accept international participants.

The founders of ELS Malaysia used their wealth of experience and accomplishments as educators in the country to spur the growth of ELS Language Centres Malaysia with the establishment of other centres in Johor Bahru (1992), Kuala Lumpur (1996), Penang (1998), Ipoh (1998) and Subang Jaya (2003).

Like its franchisor in the USA, ELS Language Centres Malaysia has quickly gained recognition as the leader in providing quality English language programmes, and was the first language centre in the country to offer the Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP) in 1990, To date, this programme is considered its flagship programme, contributing almost 80% to its overall business. In addition, ELS Malaysia has also gained a good reputation with the corporate clientele, servicing over 100 corporations, as well as working adults who attend the English classes at ELS centres.

Academic Strengths  

ELS Instructors

All instructors employed by ELS must possess an appropriate qualification for teaching English. All newly employed instructors have to undergo a six-month probation period during which it is mandatory they undertake an ELS training programme - the ELS Teacher Certification Programme. They are confirmed in their position only after they have successfully completed probation.

Teacher Certification Programme (TCP) All ELS instructors have to undertake the ELS Teacher Certification Programme upon hire. This programme consists of two modules. The first module trains instructors on company policies and procedures, classroom management and cultural awareness, steps to conducting an effective ESL class and how to conduct placement tests. The second module is run at 3 levels - elementary, intermediate and advanced,, Each level requires instructors to undergo a two-day practical 'train-the-trainer' workshop. In this module, instructors are trained to teach communicative skills-based classes for Reading, Writing, Structure & Speaking Practice, and Conversation classes.

In-house workshops

Apart from the structured Teacher Certification Programme, training sessions are held on a monthly basis to hone teaching skills and share practical teaching ideas at centre level. As an ongoing exercise, all instructors are observed by the Academic Director on a scheduled basis to ensure that standards are maintained,


Programme Outline

> School Programme

(a) Primary School English Programme (PSEP)

This is a 4-level course designed for primary school-going children aged 7 to 12. Each level takes 20 weeks to complete.

The focus of this course is on the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Through a broad range of student- centered activities - discussions, projects, games, drama and competitions - the children are given an opportunity to practice and reinforce important grammatical structures and patterns.

(b) Secondary School English Programme (SSEP)

From the earlier fun-based English learning at primary level, students get to experience real language through authentic and motivating speaking, reading and listening texts that allow them greater exposure to natural models of English so lacking outside an English-speaking country The course aims to activate the receptive (listening and reading) abilities as well as the productive skills of speaking and writing, To achieve this, the target language is practiced in a variety of ways, through authentic listening and pronunciation practices, controlled to less controlled speaking tasks and interesting reading and real writing tasks, Grammar is given meaning through its use in real contexts,

(c) Holiday English Programme (HEP)

The Holiday English Programme (HEP) is

a short and activities-based language programme designed specifically to improve the English Language proficiency of primary school students during the year-end school holidays,


> College Preparation

(a) Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP)

The Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP) allows participants to significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and to fully prepare themselves for university studies, It is a complete English programme which encompasses listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar, The programme is intensive, 7 hours per day for a total of 35 hours per week or 140 hours overall. The programme is structured to accelerate learning with maximum time spent in the classroom. In order to ensure that every student actively participates, class size is kept to a maximum of 20 students, At the end of the course, students will sit for a level test (designed and validated by Chauncey Group International) to evaluate their achievement of target skills, The ELS CIEP certificate is accepted by many universities and colleges in place of TOEFL / IELTS for entry requirements,


Course Contents

Structure / Speaking Practice This class incorporates listening, speaking, vocabulary and grammar to give students opportunities to practice the language in meaningful situations. The focus is on using the language rather than memorizing rules,

Conversation

The main purpose of this class is to build fluency. In Conversation class, students have the opportunity to talk about many different subjects and learn a great deal of vocabulary Emphasis is also placed on exploring the "functions" of the English language,

Reading / Writing

In Reading/ Writing, students learn to improve their reading comprehension and reading speed while practicing skills such as predicting content, skimming, scanning, drawing inferences and conclusions, guessing the meaning of new vocabulary from context and summarizing an article.

As students read a variety of articles, they learn ways to improve their writing skills by responding to the readings and discussing them with their classmates. In addition, students also learn to improve their critical thinking skills.

Multi-Media Lab

This class is an individualized study that utilizes a variety of technical media and programming choices to develop the students' English language skills. Students are assigned appropriate practice that will complement and reinforce their class studies,

> Workplace English

(a) Communicative English Programme (CEP)

The Communicative English Programme is designed to enable participants to function more professionally at work and more effectively in everyday situations through improved language proficiency. The course reinforces participants' knowledge of the forms and functions of the language in a communicative context.

To make maximum progress, students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning by actively participating in simulated learner-centered activities facilitated by trained and professional instructors, This programme is registered under the HRDC for the PROLUS scheme.

Company Contract Training is available for this course,

(b) Business Communication Programme (BCP) The Business Communication Programme is designed to equip participants with English relevant to the work environment. Participants can expect to improve their language proficiency in order to function more effectively in the workplace,

Participants need to meet the minimum requirement of CEP High Intermediate Level or equivalent to undertake this programme,

Placement Test

The success of ELS programmes is largely attributed to the effective placement testing done for potential students before they embark on any course. This test determines the suitable start level of students and helps maximize student progress on our programmes.

ELS Textbooks

ELS textbooks are exclusively designed to provide the special communicative curriculum you will find only at ELS Language Centres, At each level, students will need two textbooks, a copy of the Structure and Speaking Practice book, and a copy of the Reading & Writing book, Each textbook includes up-to-date material from the best and most respected authors in the ESL field.


Certificates

ELS certificates are presented on completion of the Intensive English Programme,

The Certificate of Attendance is awarded to students who have attended the course. Commencement and completion dates and the highest level attended are recorded.

The Certificate of Promotion is awarded to students who have successfully completed Levels 103 and 106.

The Certificate of Completion is awarded to students who have successfully completed Level 109.

The Certificate of Proficiency is awarded to students who have attained a distinction pass in Level 109.


Partner University

ELS Malaysia is the only private language centre in Malaysia to have its English qualifications recognized by local universities as a language admission requirement.

Our CIEP Levels 106-109 is recognized as one of the English Language admission requirements of these college / universities for the foundation / diploma / degree courses, So students can feel confident that they can achieve a personal learning goal as well as an academic college entrance requirement,

Students who have achieved the desired score for college / university entrance requirement will be counseled by our Student Advisor on placement matters.

ELS Malaysia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), one of the largest public universities in Malaysia to jointly organize the largest English Language Teaching (ELT) conference in the country known as MICELT, which is held once every two years.
