Normah Medical Specialist Centre Nursing School
Normah Medical Specialist Centre’s Nursing School aims to provide a
supportive environment for education of professional nurses who are
knowledgeable, skillful and caring.
Diploma in Basic Nursing Program
This basic nursing course provides comprehensive preparation in
health, behavioral and nursing sciences using an integrated approach. The
nursing process will be used throughout the curriculum. It aimed at providing a
humanistic and holistic approach to nursing, preparing the nurse to be sensitive
to the needs of the patient, his family and the community.
The organ system approach is adopted in teaching common health problems and
other sciences are integrated into the system to provide a coherent whole.
What is MSCT scanning?
MSCT scanner is the latest generation of CT scan with multiple rows of
detector channel. It is designed for speed and able to capture detailed
images of a beating heart and the coronary arteries. Powerful compu-
ter software will be able to reconstruct images in any plane without loss
of resolution. Coloured 3D images can be obtained as a matter of
routine.
Multi-slice CT scanners (MSCT) represents the newer generations of CT
scanner that has been in production since 1 998. There are different
types of MSCT scanners in the market ranging from 2 to 64-slice MSCT.
This differs mainly in the speed of acquiring the images. Assuming all the
parameters are the same, a 64-slice CT will be 64 times faster than the
single slice CT scan. 64-slice MSCT represents one of the most advanced
commercially available CT scanner. However, 1 28 slice and 256 slice
MSCT scanners are now under evaluation in the research laboratories.
What will I experience during MSCT scanning?
MSCT scanning is a patient friendly examination that causes minimal
discomfort. Patients need to keep still and be able to hold their breath
for about 15 to 20 seconds during the actual scan. Sometimes, an
injection with medical contrast media will be administered to enhance
the sensitivity of the scan. Following the injection, most patients may
experience one to two minutes of a generalised warm feeling and a
metallic taste in the mouth. You will be alone in the room during the
MSCT scan. However, the radiographer can see, hear and speak with you at all
times.
What are the uses of MSCT scans?
MSCT scan obtains pictures of the body with sub-millimetre resolution
and is a great way to look inside the body without the need of
exploratory surgery. It is widely used to diagnose cancers, infections,
bleeding, blood vessel occlusion or dilatation. Surgeons use the pictures
of the CT scan to help plan for a safer surgery. It is also used to monitor
the effectiveness of cancer treatment. MSCT allows us to produce clear
2 or 3 dimensional pictures of the inside of the body and this was not
possible with our old single slice CT scanner. After using MSCT scan for
the past year, we discovered that MSCT excels in these areas:
a) Heart Scan
b) Scanning of blood vessels ( MSCT angiogram )
c) Extended coverage of scan area
d) Excellent 3D colour pictures and display of complex structures
MSCT has been shown to be a cost effective imaging tool for a wide
range of clinical problems.
