University College Status

SUNWAY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE is formally the SUNWAY COLLEGE. Sunway College was upgraded to a degree-awarding university, fully approved by the Education Ministry in August 2004.

Sunway University College was conferred University College status by the Ministry of Higher Education on 12 August 2004. The approval letter was presented by the then Higher Education Minister YB Dato’ Dr Shafie bin Haji Mohd Salleh to YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Jeffrey Cheah, now the Foundation Chancellor of Sunway University College, during the launch of the National Patriotic Day celebrations at Sunway University College.

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Jeffrey Cheah Fook Ling was officially installed as the University’s Foundation Chancellor on 19 September 2006 in the presence of His Royal Highness Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah AlHaj.

Founded by Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah in 1987, Sunway College was the first private college to answer Government’s call to the private sector to assist in providing tertiary education opportunities.

The College is one of the pioneers in twinning with universities in Australia, Britain and America. Some of its students have gone on to do better than their foreign counterparts in their final university examinations.

Sunway College has also successfully partnered with Monash University to operate the first branch campus of a foreign University in Malaysia, this being Monash University Malaysia. At present, Monash University Malaysia has an enrolment of over 2,500 students.

Sunway University College has developed into a well established educational institution that offers a very high standard of education to Malaysian and international students with  eminent scholars to teach the undergraduates and also to undertake high-quality research and development.

In 1997, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah placed Sunway College in a trust administered by a Board of Trustees headed by Tun Haji Omar Yoke- Lin Ong. The College has since awarded more than RM20 million in scholarships to over 1,000 Malaysian students. In 2003, the Sunway College Trust, which owns 100% of Sunway College and 76% of Monash University Malaysia, earned fees in excess of RM120 million.

Sunway International Business & Management Sdn Bhd (SIBM) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sunway University College, Malaysia. Sunway University College is founded by the Sunway Group of companies in 1987, and has since grown into one of the largest private education institutions in Malaysia.

Sunway International Business & Management  offer a broad range of training services to enhance individual competence and commitment, improve organizational performance and achieve competitive advantage. These services include public programmes, in-house training programmes and consultancy services.

Sunway University College was formed with the belief and understanding that higher education is vital to the progress of the Nation. The institution received an auspicious start in 1987 when it was officially opened by the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Alhaj Sultan of Selangor Darul Ehsan. Within a short span of time, its student numbers outgrew the original premises, eventually leading to the opening of the new, purpose-built campus.

The New Campus

Occupying 22 acres of prime land in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, the RM 120 million campus fully equipped with academic, hostel and sports facilities is among the largest and most modern private institutions in Malaysia.

The ground breaking ceremony was held on March 9, 1991 and in December 1992, the institution moved to this new campus, complete with a comprehensive range of modern academic and residential facilities. By January 1993, all academic sessions were conducted here. The grandest moment in the history of Sunway University College came on April 29, 1993 when the new campus was officially opened by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, then the 4th Prime Minister of Malaysia. It represents a major investment by the Sunway Group towards education.

That moment declared the aspirations of Sunway University College to become a world-class institution and the leader in private education in Malaysia and the ASEAN region, in line with the Prime Minister's vision that Malaysia should become a center for academic excellence.

Sunway University College has attained enviable success in producing students of outstanding caliber, many of whom have achieved prestigious awards. It is, thus, no wonder that Sunway University College has received the praise and accolades of VIP visitors, including Malaysian and foreign dignitaries and representatives from overseas institutions and twinning partners. Among them have been numerous distinguished professors of international repute who have given guest lectures while on their visits.

Sunway University College has built a fine reputation and proud tradition of excellence and leadership. Yet never to rest on its laurels, the institution continues in its progress towards excellence. The institution's Founder and Chairman of the Sunway Group, YBhg Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah has placed Sunway University College into a Trust in 1997, under the eminent chairmanship of YABhg Tun Omar Ong Yoke Lin. This auspicious occasion was witnessed by YB Dato' Seri Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, the then Minister of Education. Such is the commitment of Sunway University College, Malaysia's Premier Private University College.
