On 10 November 2005, Genting Group founder and honorary life chairman. Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, was conferred an honorary Degree of Doctor of Entrepreneurship by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

UTAR council chairman. Tun Dr. Ling Liong Sik, conferred the honorary degree in a ceremony at Wisma Genting in Kuala Lumpur.

"The conferment of this degree is in recognition of Tan Sri Lim's outstanding achievements and positive contributions to education and the business community," said Dr. Ling at the conferment ceremony.

"From his humble and modest beginnings, he rose to be a top-class self-made entrepreneur. Tan Sri Lim understands fully the challenges, trials and tribulations of establishing and running a big business conglomerate," continued Dr. Ling. "We salute a man of his stature gifted with great tenacity of mind and purpose combined with the determination and tremendous will power to succeed."

Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong has also earned numerous other awards throughout his career such as the Malaysian Entrepreneur Award, the Manager of the Year Award, the Business Achiever of the Year Award, the Special Tourism Award and he has been honored with the FIABCI Property Man of the Year of Distinction. He truly is a self-made man.

Perseverance and Diligence

When he was just 19 years old. Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong set sail from China to Malaysia with only RM175 in his pocket. Starting off as a carpenter in Kuala Lumpur, he moved on to other businesses, gaining experience and business savvy along the way. While working on a hydroelectric project in Cameron Highlands, he envisioned a mountain resort where city dwellers could seek refuge from the tropical heat.

His quest led him to Ulu Kali mountain, just 58 kilometers away from Kuala Lumpur and set 1,800 meters above sea level. Despite much hardship, he persevered and established Genting Highlands resort. The rest is history.

Today, the Genting Group, run by Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong's son. Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, is a vast business empire with interests in power generation, paper manufacturing, oil and gas exploration, property development, information technology, ecommerce and plantations. The jewel of the Genting Group still remains the resort, which has become the premier holiday resort in Malaysia. With the recently concluded 40th anniversary celebrations in 2005, the star on Genting - City of Entertainment looks set to shine ever brighter.
