Zyxomma dragonflies  includes two rather dissimilar, medium-sized species. Both are crepuscular and common in a variety of disturbed and natural habitats.


Zyxomma obtusum  is covered in a beautiful white pruinescence with a powdery bloom on the wings. 

It is common around polluted drains, ponds and lakes from the lowlands up to about 800 m but is often overlooked as it normally commences activity after sunset. They fly back and forth rapidly few inxhes over the water surface in the evening light.

Mature male Zyxomma obtusum (hw 38 mm) with strong white bloom on body and wings.

Immature and female are darker; otherwise similar.  . Commences activity at sunset. Attracted to light. Widespread in Sundaland.


Zyxomma petiolatum is recognized by its smaller size and somber colors and the shape of its abdomen, swollen basally then exceedingly thin. It occurs in similar situations to Zyxomma obtusum but is also common at the edges of swamp forest and sometimes may be disturbed inside the forest during the day. It normally commences activity about two hours before sunset and flies well into the dusk.

Zyxomma petiolatum hw 33 mm. Recognized by its somber colors, green eyes and very slender ab, swollen at base. $ similar but ab slightly thicker. Ponds, drains and sluggish streams in open country and swampy forest, 0-700 m. Active from late afternoon until after dusk, avoiding sunlight. Flies rapidly, hovering over water; hangs vertically at rest suggesting a small aeshnid; attracted to light.

Widespread in tropical Asia and Australasia.
 

Both species are attracted to light.
