| Tawau's First International School posted on Mar 19, 2014 Charis International School is the first international school in Tawau that was approved by the Private Education Department of the Ministry of Education Malaysia. The setting up of this school will open up a whole new horizon in the field of education for the children of Tawau. With globalization and advances in IT development, the world is changing at a rapid pace. It is a concern and desire of all parents to provide their children with the best education so that they will be well equipped and ready to face the challenges ahead of them. With this in mind, Calvary City Church decided to start this new international school in Tawau. It will be located at the Calvary Crown that is presently under construction in Taman Setia, along Jalan Datuk Chong Thein Vun. Michael Watson, a well known interior designer from the UK was engaged to do the interior layout. Among his notable projects are the design of three palaces in Saudi Arabia, a chain of hotels in the UK, as well as retail outlets and airports in some Europe. The building will cost an estimated RM18 million and will be of four-star standard. Students who study here will have an international experience from the multinational expatriate teaching staff. The standard of teaching and conducive environment will nurture minds, build good character and groom students to have leaderships skills. Charis International School has also in principal been approved by the Cambridge International Examination (CIE) to become a CIE Registered Centre. Once the building is completed and the Occupation Certificate is obtained, the school will register with the Sabah State Department and Ministry of Education as well as seek affiliation with CIE in order to offer the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Lower Secondary, Primary and Kindergarten Programs. The IGCSE of Secondary Education is currently the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year old students. It is conducted in more than 2,600 schools worldwide, including 650 schools in the UK. The school will not only improve the educational infrastructures in Tawau for the local students but will also meet the needs of expatriate children. Ng Kim Huat, the Senior School Development Manager (Malaysia) for the CIE said that there is no such thing as a budget international school. The fees will reflect the high standard that internationals are known to have. Charis International School will engage both expatriate and local teachers who are qualified and experienced. Classes will be kept small, with no more than 25 students in one class. School will commence in August 2014 with only one class for each level.
