Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, The AirAsia group chief executive officer, chairs the board of governors of Epsom College in Malaysia, a new international school.

Fernandes invested RM150mil in Epsom College located on a 20.2ha site in Bandar Enstek, south of Kuala Lumpur.

Fernandes was educated at Epsom College in Britain from 1977 to 1983. He believes that the well-rounded education offered by the college will benefit Malaysian students.

He now wants to make the same type of education available to students in Malaysia and in the region.

“Education is not just about scoring 15As. It's about bringing out the potential in every child,”
Tony Fernandes

While Epsom College itself was a for-profit venture, Tony Fernandes planned to channel his share of the profits into scholarships for students.

Fernandes said students at Epsom College will have an advantage because of the profile of members on its board of governors.

The students would have an opportunity to be involved in a range of industries.

Many parents from China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand and Britain have registered their children.

Epsom College in Malaysia is a new international school with a Senior School being built on a 50 acre site at Bandar Enstek, just south of Kuala Lumpur, as part of the Kuala Lumpur Education City (KLEC) project. A site for the new Junior School is being identified in the south-western suburbs of Kuala Lumpur.

Seen as a major development in the field of education in Malaysia, Epsom is co-educational and will follow the British National Curriculum with all teaching in English. It is currently planned for the Senior School, which is both a day and boarding school, opening in September 2013.
