Dawos: Bio-tourism to be developed and targeted at foreigners to complement eco-tourism

KUCHING: Bio-tourism 生物旅遊 will be developed as another strategy to woo foreign tourists to Sarawak and Sabah.

This was disclosed by Tourism Deputy Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos.

He said that one very good example of a bio-tourism product was the orang utan in Semonggok.

“People flocking to see the orang utan is not eco-tourism. 生態旅遊 Orang utan is a part of the state’s biodiversity,” he said at the Tourism Ministry’s Gawai Dayak open house at Mile 10 multi-purpose hall in Kota Padawan yesterday.

“That is why based on statistics that I have looked into, only 3% of tourists visited eco-sites or eco-system because what they visited were actually bio-tourism sites.

“They want to have comfort and so they want to walk in areas that have footpaths and where they can bring their cameras and wear good clothes.

“When you provide these facilities, it is not eco-tourism but bio-tourism. They come to to see just one thing in nature,” he said.
“I mentioned bio-tourism and he (the representative) showed great interest and wanted to pick up the idea.
“I have also discussed bio-tourism with Sabah Tourism Board and Sabah Tourism Malaysia director and right away they said they would adopt it, saying it was a very good idea and very good strategy,” he said.

He noted that eco-tourism could comprise a visit to an pristine forest which had not been disturbed by humans and no development.

He said in Malaysia, people promoted and marketed eco-tourism differently.

He said it was more appropriate to adopt and develop bio-tourism because when tourists came, they were on holiday and did not want to be troubled by walking in a virgin forest or jungle.

Dawos said the Australian eco-tourism society was going to pick the idea of bio-tourism as well.

He said a representative from the society had come to see him to extend a personal invitation to present a paper on eco-tourism in Queensland in November.

Kota Padawan and its surrounding areas have great potential to be a leading tourist attraction.

Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said this at the opening ceremony of the ‘2012 Kuching Autoshow and Accessories Event’ at Giant Hypermarket in Kota Padawan on Thursday.

He said: “Kota Padawan is one of the significantly growing areas apart from the commercial and residential properties in Kuching. There are many places for local visitors and tourists to go to in Padawan. It would create more businesses and bring in more job opportunities.”

Meanwhile, he also said the event was a good example of the increasing cooperation between the private sector and the government that benefit the people and the community at large.
“This is a win-win situation. The council is fully behind the holding of such events because this would raise the status of surrounding areas while creating important businesses to locals,” he explained.
On Kota Padawan area, he said it was a rapidly developing and vibrant region and a perfect place to hold events for peoples from all walks of life.
The show is held from Thursday until Sunday (May 6) and is participated by more than 12 car and car accessory dealers showcasing more than 20 brands of vehicles, latest products and technologies.
The ‘one-stop’ station promises to be a convenient venue for visitors to enjoy shopping.

KUCHING: Being placed in a juvenile rehabilitation centre does not mean the end of the line for residents of Sekolah Tunas Bakti here.

The school has been accredited by the Skills Development Department to provide skills training and courses under the Malaysian Skills Certification (SKM) to its students.

Yesterday, a total of 27 boys aged no more than 18 received their SKM scrolls during the school’s first convocation.

These youngsters completed their training in various accredited fields of study such as Level 1 Electrician, Agricultural Plantation Worker and Carpentry courses, among others.

“Now these residents can continue living their lives like normal people and they will have a brighter future once they are released,” Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said during the ceremony at a hotel here.

She believed that every youth including the Tunas Bakti residents should be given a chance in gaining knowledge and improving their lives.

She said the initiative by the Skills Development Department to provide relevant training and courses to these residents would help them have a bright future after their release.

“It is an important development that would enable them, upon release, to get a kickstart and a job, or to continue their studies to a higher level,” said Fatimah.

She also revealed that out of the 27 graduates, six of them had been given early release not only for their good behaviour but also for their outstanding achievements in their respective courses.

She explained it all began in 2009 when Tunas Bakti schools nationwide were given an allocation to start skills training programmes for their young residents.

Last year, the school was given accreditation to provide three courses for which trainees would be awarded the SKM upon completion.

“Now that the first batch has successfully completed their training and would make use of their skills in the working world outside once they are released, I suggest that the Tunas Bakti management do tracking on the students to see if their certification could grant them jobs or means to pursue higher education.

“Based on data obtained from the tracking, we would know if the courses provided are relevant to the current job market,” said Fatimah.

Fatimah also urged other institutions under the Welfare Department to follow suit Tunas Bakti’s initiative to set up their own accredited skills training courses.

Apart from the graduation, the ceremony also announced the induction of 35 residents who had just enrolled in the SKM courses.

Out of nine Tunas Bakti schools nationwide, two are in the state — the one here houses some 140 boys while the Miri school is for girls.

Set up by the Welfare Department under the Children’s Act 2001, Tunas Bakti is a behaviour rehabilitation school approved for the care of and rehabilitation for children aged 18 years and under who are involved in crime or are deemed uncontrollable.

Maximum sentence for an offender is three years, according to court order.

Sibanyis Quarry is located 2.4 km (approximately 1.5 miles) north-east of the intersection of Mile 15 Kuching-Serian Road and the Kuching Outer Ring Road. Built at a total project cost of RM23.5 million, the quarry has a plant capacity of 900,000 metric tones (mt) per annum.

Jalan Kuching–Serian is a major highway in both Kuching and Samarahan Divisions in Sarawak, Malaysia. This highway is part of the Pan Borneo Highway AH150 AH150, part municipal council road and part state road.

Although, the Kilometre Zero (or Mile Zero) for all roads in Sarawak is the Charles Brooke Memorial in Kuching, Jalan Kuching–Serian actually begins from the 3rd Mile Interchange and ends at the Serian Roundabout.
