Agriculture in Kuching Division

Major agricultural activities carried out by the farming population in Kuching Division include :

1) Garden supply of fruits and vegetables,

2) pepper

3) coconut cultivation

4) livestock rearing like poultry and ruminant animals (small scale only), and

5) Aquaculture (commercial breeding of fresh and brackish water fish in ponds and floating cages and rearing of tiger prawn particularly in coastal areas of Kuching and Lundu districts).

6) Plantation/estate crop :  oil palm  (Lundu and Bau districts)

Because of its fertile Samarahan River Basin, Samarahan Division is the main agriculture area in Sarawak for production of  coconut, sweet oranges, cocoa, pepper as well as production of livestock products.

Recent years, Samarahan is also a preferred tiger-prawn rearing zone among aquaculture entrepreneurs.
