Lake Gardens

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park

23rd November 2006

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park http://www.birdpark.com.my

The gardens are children's playground, jogging tracks, exercise stations, and rowing boats.

We took a taxi from old China Town to the Lake Garden. We started from the Children Playground. The Kuala Lumpur Lake Garden ( Taman Tasik Perdana ) is built around two artificial lakes, encompassing over 90 hectares of greenery interspersed with flowering shrubs, shady trees and botanical gardens. A popular outdoor spot for families and lovebirds alike, the park also offers children playgrounds, jogging tracks and exercise stations. There is also an outdoor theatre for musical and cultural performances.

We spend half hour in the Oasis Garden looking for dragonflies and damselflies.  We are able to spot 2 species of dragonflies and 1 species of damselfly.  All 3 species are common in Asia

  Neurothemis fluctuans  (Fabricius, 1793)

A few of them flying around. Commonly seen in pond, lake and stream.

  Trithemis aurora

We saw only 2 or 3 in the Odisis Garden. Trithemis aurora is a beautiful dragonfly of medium size with a pink body and deep red veins.

Copera marginipes (Rambur, 1842)

Synthorax marked with yellow streaks. Legs yellow color.  A few pair of them are mating. This is the first time I saw this species, so I took more pictures of this damselfly.

By the time I saw this pair of Copera marginipes damselfly, they are already in Oviposition (laying eggs). I missed the earlier 3 stages.  The stages of REPRODUCTIVE BEHAVIOR of a damselfly are as following :
1 - Tandem position (30 minutes)  > 2 - Sperm translocation (2 seconds ) > 3 - Wheel formation and Copulation (30 minutes) > 4 - Oviposition (30 minutes)

This  is male guarding Oviposition. After copulation the male in upright position still holding the female by the neck, together they fly to find suitable places to oviposit (lay egg), usually on submerged vegetation below water surface.

After ensuring the completion of ovipositon,  the male detaches itself and flies away leaving the female alone. (Men shouldn't be like that, should they ?)

As we stroll the Lake Garden, hardly any visitors in the garden.  It is noon time, the tropical sun heat is unbearable. But we know by evening crowd begin to gather here for exercises and jogging.  At this time while people is spare in this beautiful garden, it the best time for a newly wed  to shoot their outdoor wedding photos.

These serene and scenic 60-hectare Lake Gardens established in 1888 formed the green belt of Kuala Lumpur. The lakes are artificial lakes. Visitors can take a leisurely boat cruise to enjoy views of the gardens from the water. Visitors will enjoy strolling through the park along a maze of walkways, amidst greenery. Scenic rest stops for picnics are scattered throughout the park.

After the Memorial Tun Abdul Razak a short distance away is this direction sign board. KL Bird Park is on the right hand side.

Deer Park  -  Located in the undulating slopes and sprawling valley of the Lake Gardens is the Kuala Lumpur Deer Park. A well-chosen peaceful area that is more than 2ha in size
We were greatly disappointed to find out that the Deer Park is CLOSED. The notice indicated it was closed in 2005 for repair and maintenance works. It seemed been closed for many months and will remain closed to the public for many months to come.

As we turned out back to leave,  a park officer on the slop a distance away called us to walk up the hill to the park office. There behind the park office we watched and fed the deer over the fen.

The deer roam freely in the sprawling valley.  It seemed that we two are the only visitors to border them  in that day.

The park officer gave us a bunch of banana and called out loud to the deer on hill slop  'weee.... weee... weee...'.  Much to our delight, these friendly, gentle, intelligent creatures come close to be fed.

We could not see any Malaysia most famous deer, the rainforest mouse deer (kancil). The mouse deer is the world's smallest hoofed animal and a popular figure in local folklore due to its legendary wit.

Before we reach the Bird Park, we passed by Memorial Tun Abdul Razak.  Due to short of time, we did not stop by to visit this museum.

Encounter the aviary wild life experience at Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. A short distance walk from the Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Farm, you will come across the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park which houses more than 50 species of exotic birds flying freely in the enclosed paradise. If you are a nature lover it would be an experience to be able to feel and see these colorful birds living in its natural habitats, flying around freely within the beautifully landscaped cavern. Among the species variety are Hornbill, Hawk, Eagles, Vultures, Peacocks and some 50 other more species that can also be found within its vicinity. One of the largest bird parks in the region, the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park houses over 5,000 birds, with 90% local and 10% imported from overseas. The park spans 2-8 hectares of free flight aviary and 5 hectares devoted specifically to the birds in this park.

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is  one of the best things in the city with some of the world's most exotic bird species... This beautifully landscaped area was designed to bear a close likeness to nature with trees, flowering shrubs and miniature waterfalls. The park is situated in the vast green belt which surrounds central Kuala Lumpur near the Butterfly Park.  It is open daily from 9am to 6.30pm.

Spanning an area of 20 hectares, over 5,000 birds from over 200 species roam the park. The birds are 90% local and 10% imported from overseas. Most are free-flying in the covered park, which is shaped like one huge aviary. Visitors can walk on the tiled paths and gaze at birds in their element; storks and flamingoes frolicking in the water, finches and thrush chirping among the trees and owls roosting in barns.

There are several stall selling drink and snack but  I felt liketo have a proper meal. The only restaurent we could find is Hornbill Restoran about a hundred meters from the entrance.  Xing ordered  Chicken Nuggets and I had a Nasi Goreng.  Togather with drinks the meal cost Rm. 31.74 for two.

Bird Park is close to the Orchid Garden and the Tun Abdul Razak Memorial. Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is one of the largest covered bird park in the world, sprawling 8 acres of verdant valley terrain. Bird lovers can have a field day watching more than 3000 birds perching and winging about freely-in a totally natural enviroment.

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, the largest bird park in South-East Asia, holds thousands of birds representing nearly every major species of this part of the world. Open from 9am - 6pm daily except public holidays.

Bird-watching is common here where the flora and fauna is rich yet mysteriously hides the birds from the naked eye of the beholder. A simple pair of binoculars will enable you to catch sight of the species of your interest.

The Kuala Lumpur Bird Park has earned the reputation among those who are keen on the study of birds in their natural habitat. Some of them include research scientist who monitor bird nests for the study of behavioral patterns. On a warm sunny day, one can even hear the sound of bird chicks chirping away to get their parents attention or for more food in the nest.

Miniature lakes are frequently used by the Flamingo, Crane, Peking Duck and Swan species for food hunting or leisure. Around these lakes, are many huts designed for picnickers or lovebirds on the romantic pursuit.

There is also a special park intended for the free roaming habitat of the Hornbill species with a lake attached to the landscape. Since the Hornbill species is less mobile than other species, this location is perfect for them to maintain a permanent residence without intrusion from rival species.

A walk through the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park will certainly be a rewarding experience that you will find not only harmony but also the sound of symphony from the wing-spanned residents.

Zone 4 - Photo Booth where you get opportunities to photograph yourself holding birds such as eagles and macaws. Rm 5.00 for using own camera.

I love best these two owls at the Photo Booth.  They are rear to see in the wild. These owls are beautiful, clean, cool with 2 big bright eyes. In story books they are the wise men. I chose one of the owl for my son to photograph with.

Zone 4 - Bird Show in Amphi Theatre. The parrots can count in simple arithmetic, ride a skateboard or mini bicycle, and complete other puzzles.

Only a total of 6 audient for the bird show including two of us no in this picture. Hardly any Malaysian visitors to the park when we visit the park on 23 November 2006
