The Gurdwara Sahib Malacca was built in 1925 by the Sikh sangat most
of whom served in the Police Force. The present size of the Gurdwara
Sahib land is 69,879 square feet.
The late Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji was appointed as a Granthi in this
Gurdwara Sahib in November 1927. He also used to serve in the Police
Gurdwara Malacca. which no longer exists.
Baba Sohan was very highly respected for his in depth lectures on
Sikh religion by the Sikh sangat of Malaysia and Singapore. Sant
Baba Sohan Singh Ji passed away on 24th May 1972 after a short
illness.
The Gurdwara Sahib Malacca commemorates the date of Sant Baba Sohan
Singh Ji's passing away by holding an Akhand Path and prayers
annually, popularly known as Babaji's Barsi. Over the years the
devotees attending Babaji's Barsi have increased tremendously.
In 1975 the Sant Sohan Singh Ji Malacca Memorial Society leased a
piece of land from the Gurdwara Sahib Malacca. They constructed a
double storey building known as the Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji Dharmak
Vidyala, which was officially opened on 23' May 1976.
In late 1996 plans were made to erect a new three-storey building at
the back of the present Gurdwara Sahib in memory of the late Sant
Baba Sohan Singh Ji. This building which is known as the Sant Baba
Sohan Singh Ji complex was completed in early 1998 at a cost of
RM2,000,000.00. This building was officially opened by the Panj
Piyarae on Vesakhi day 13th April 1998. The ground floor comprises
of the langgar hall and kitchen. The first floor includes the
Granthi's quarters, function rooms and two visitors' rooms as well
as a large library. This library contains many rare books, which
used to belong to the late Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji. The second
floor has a large open hall about 5000 square feet, which is used as
a second Darbar Sahib in which is placed the Holy Book, Sri Guru
Granth Sahib Ji.
In early 1998 the old Gurdwara Sahib building was extensively
renovated but the original structure was left intact. At the same
time an adjacent plot of land was also purchased and upgraded. There
are 30 students who study Gurmukhi in this Gurdwara Sahib. Classes
are held twice weekly on Saturdays and Sundays.
Giani Ran Singh Ji, Village Raekay Kela, Bhatinda has been serving
as a Granthi in this Gurdwara Sahib since 1989.
There are presently about 70 Sikh families who participate in the
religious activities in this Gurdwara Sahib. The weekly prayers are
held on Sunday mornings accompanied with the Asa Di War kirtan from
6.30a.m. to 8.00a.m. The Isteri Satsang programme is held once a
month on the Sangrand day. |
