Blow flies (Calliphoridae)

Greenbottle and Stomorhina, Taman Semarak, Tawau

The family names on this page are the photographer's own, from his old fly pages; they have not been checked by a specialist or on iNaturalist. Dates come from the camera or from the date printed on the photograph.

Blow flies are medium-sized flies, many of them metallic green or blue. The adults visit flowers and decaying matter; the larvae of many species feed on carrion.

Order Diptera · Family Calliphoridae (blow flies) · genera as named below.

Left off this page: the old page also showed a photograph labelled "Stomorhina sp., 22-6-2009 Merotai". It shows a shiny black insect with long, beaded antennae and hard wing cases; it does not look like a fly, and is probably a beetle. It stays in the photographer's archive until it is checked.
