Palm Oil Refiners of Malaysia
The typical palm oil factory in Malaysia comprises a large lofty shed building
constructed on unprotected steel portal frame with walls and roof of corrugated
asbestos and/or galvanized iron sheets.
Service buildings such as vehicle maintenance workshops, mill offices, general
stores, etc. together with the incinerators, for burning empty bunches, and the
crude palm oil storage tanks are nearly always well separated from the main
factory building.
Location of the factory and ancillary buildings is usually within the oil palm
estate itself on a cleared fenced-off plot of land, size varying from some two
to six hectares. Constant clearing of growing vegetation in the compound ensures
that an effective fire break is maintained to prevent any possibility of
external exposure to the buildings from a fire in the surrounding oil palm
growing crops.

The establishment of oil palm plantations (along with rubber and pulp
plantations) in
Sumatra, Kalimantan and East Malaysia has been cited as the major cause of the
air pollution that affected many areas of Southeast Asia in 1997 (Clay, 2004;
Rosenburg, 1999; Sargeant, 2001).
