Tongkonan architecture has a distinguishing boat-shaped big sized saddle back roof.

Tongkonan are built on piles, a laborious work built with the help of all family members.

In the traditional Toraja society, only nobles had the right to build Tongkonan. Ordinary people live in smaller and less decorated homes called Banua.
