Sultan Idris Training College (SITC) was established on 29 November 1922. In 1957, adhering to the recommendation of the Razak Report, SITC was renamed as Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris (MPSI). In 1975, MPSI
accepted the first batch of female students. In 1987, MPSI was upgraded to an institute known as Institut Perguruan Sultan Idris (IPSI). On 2 May 1997, the first University of Education in Malaysia known as Universiti Pendidikan Sultan
Idris (UPSI) was established by upgrading the status of MPSI. The vision of the University is to be an eminent university, with excellent leadership in education based on its glorious history as well as in its aspiration
to pioneer global changes in education.
The mission of the University is to generate and promote the expansion of knowledge through teaching, research, publications, consultations and community services in the context of
human development to achieve the nation's vision.
Today, the University has approximately 457 teaching staff and 590 non-academic staff. The student population is about 11,097 in various programmes at the bachelor levels
and 727 following various programmes at the master's level, and 362 following various programmes at the doctoral level. Altogether now there are eight faculties, namely, Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Information Technology
and Communications, Faculty of Language, Faculty of Art and Music, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Cognitive Science, and Human Development, Faculty of Sports Science, and Faculty of Social Science.
Research and development (R&D) activities at UPSI focus on various issues and areas in education and in other selected fields.
