Asia-Europe Institute

University of Malaya

The Asia-Europe Institute has successfully established itself as one of Southeast Asia's leading institutions for postgraduate research and teaching in the area of social sciences. The origins of the AEI can be traced back to the idea of establishing closer higher education linkages between Asia and Europe under the provisions of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) initiative in 1996. With a philosophy of enhancing Asia-Europe relations, AEI aims to foster exchange of students and scholars with a view to develop better understanding of the cultures, histories, politics, institutions, economics, business and legal practices of both regions.

In 1997, the Government of Malaysia established the Asia-Europe Centre (AEC), the first step towards Asia-Europe University cooperation in education, designed to support the Four Pillars of the ASEM process. Three years after its inception, on 2 January 2000, the AEC was transformed into a full-fledged academic institution. It was renamed Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) and is hosted by the University of Malaya, the oldest university in Malaysia.

Over the years, AEI has received staunch support from the Government of Malaysia, working in partnership with other ASEM countries, It reflects Malaysia's commitment to internationalizing higher education and advancing the idea of AEI as an 'educational infrastructure and network of knowledge for Asia and Europe in the twenty-first century'.

AEI aims to be the place where intellectual discourses are held. Key issues on intensifying globalization and the regionalization of environment, international business, innovation and technologies and inter-regional relations between Asia and Europe are discussed. Further, AEI promotes collaborative research with academic as well as government and private sectors. Our research pillars and range of international postgraduate courses indicate the breadth and quality of expertise that AEI can bring to bear. As such, our postgraduate students are central to the realization of a collaborative and innovative education hub for the future.

Vision To be a centre of excellence in teaching/ research and multilateralism in Asia and Europe

Mission To spearhead quality academic and research work through smart partnerships between Asia and Europe

Each of the International Masters programmes has been established in joint partnership with leading institutions in Asia and Europe. This has resulted in close coordination in all aspects of course design, management delivery and evaluation, as well as the validation of joint degrees and joint recognition. Our International Master's programmes will be committed to developing new partnerships with leading international universities.

Few university institutions in Southeast Asia are as truly international as AEi. We study not only Malaysian or Southeast Asian areas of interest, but those of other countries, many of them in a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. The student community at AEI is one of the most internationally diverse in the region, with students from more than 20 countries having studied our programmes. This mix encourages a truly global and international approach to intellectual discovery and academic life at AEI.

Experienced High Quality Staff

Each of the International Master's programmes is taught jointly by the AEI's academic staff and Visiting Professors, all of whom are experts in their respective fields. This ensures that AEI's students have the benefit of learning from leading scholars who bring with them outstanding pedagogical practices and research insights. In addition to their teaching duties, Visiting Professors add considerable value through frequent dialogues with the University's local faculty, the promotion of collaborative research and other public outreach activities.

AEI's staff and Visiting Professors are regularly sought out as advisers, consultants, and commentators, becoming actively engaged in the practical impact of the subject they teach in and research on. Students will also benefit from the constant stream of national and international politicians, business leaders, civil servants, and academics who visit AEI to consult staff and to give lectures.
