Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara Kinarut Sabah

school leavers who need vocational skill-based education, the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) is the place for them. For the people of Sabah, the IKBN is located in Kinarut, on a 12 hectare site along the Jalan Lama Kota Kinabalu – Papar, and operational in January, 2003. A training institute under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Youths and Sports, it caters for school leavers who wish to pursue vocational skills education which are tailor-made to meet the requirement of the manufacturing sector of the nation. Graduates of such institute are awarded the Malaysian Skills Certificates (SKM) issued by the National Vocational Training Council (MLVK) and Competency Certificates issued by the Utility Commission. Both certificates are recognised by the government based on their related scope of training.

IKBN Kinarut Sabah was constructed in 2001 and handed over to the Ministry of Youth and Sports in the mid-January 2003. It is one of the seven IKBN projects budgeted under the Eighth Malaysian Development Pelan (RMK8). The IKBN Kinarut site is located in a swampy area that was formerly designated for the cultivation of acacia trees project. However, the land ownership was given to the Sabah State Government as the building site of IKBN Kinarut. Within the vicinity of the Institute are two other educational institutes namely, the Kota Kinabalu Mara Science College (MRSM) and the Tun DatuMustafa Religious School.

The setting up of the Institute helps to fulfil the demand for skills training among the local youths and other parts of Sabah. The trainings conducted in this Institute are organised, competitive, creative, innovative and of high quality, and recognised by the government. The programmes at IKBN Kinarut are also accredited by professional bodies. The campus is located near three small towns; Pekan Kinarut, Pekan Lok Kawi and Pekan Palutan whose infrastructures and facilities include government clinic, banks, police station, supermarket, public transportation and others.
