United College Sarawak (UCS) - History and Development

Introduction

United College Sarawak (UCS) was a private higher education institution established in 1997 in Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia. The college was committed to providing industry-relevant education to students across Sarawak and beyond. In 2010, UCS was renamed Kolej Laila Taib (KLT) in honor of the late Datuk Patinggi Dr. Laila Taib, wife of former Sarawak Chief Minister Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud. The institution continues to operate today, contributing to Sarawak’s educational development.

Campus Location

During its operation as United College Sarawak, the institution was located at:

31 Pusat Pedada, 96000 Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia

Following the transition to Kolej Laila Taib, the college expanded, with locations at:

• Main Campus: 323 Persiaran Brooke, 96000 Sibu, Sarawak
• Kuching Branch: Level 3, Crown Towers, 88 Jalan Pending, 93450 Kuching

Academic Programs

UCS offered diploma-level programs designed to provide practical and industry-relevant education, catering to students seeking careers in various technical and business fields. The academic disciplines included:

• Business Management
• Accounting
• Civil Engineering

• Electrical & Electronic Engineering
• Quantity Surveying (Accredited by the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia)

The college was recognized as the first private institution in Malaysia to receive full accreditation from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and other relevant professional bodies.

Transition to Kolej Laila Taib (KLT)

In 2010, UCS was officially rebranded as Kolej Laila Taib (KLT) to commemorate the contributions of Datuk Patinggi Dr. Laila Taib. The renaming aimed to continue UCS’s mission while expanding educational opportunities for students in Sarawak. The transition was marked by an increase in academic offerings and infrastructure improvements.

The rebranding also saw the college being donated to the Sarawak government for a symbolic sum of RM1. It is now wholly owned and managed by Yayasan Sarawak.

Historical Significance & Contributions

UCS/KLT played a significant role in Sibu’s development as an education hub. Key contributions include:

• Serving as a non-profit private college founded by donors, including Tan Sri Dr. Wong Soon Kai, a former Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) president.
• Strengthening technical and vocational education in Sarawak, aligning with the region’s infrastructure and economic growth.
• Producing over 3,500 graduates since its inception, helping drive human capital development in Malaysia.
• Complementing other higher education institutions in the region, including the University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS).

• The Kolej Laila Taib Education Fund, which provides scholarships for deserving students pursuing diploma programs.
• Articulation agreements with universities in Australia and Britain, allowing graduates to continue their studies abroad.
• Plans to attain university-college status, further expanding its academic offerings and research capabilities.
