Programmes for SPM students

University of Malaya is the first university of Malaysia. Situated on a 750-acre campus in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia.

UM was formed in 1949 with the merging of King Edwards VII Medical College and Raffles College in Singapore.

The University later moved to its present site in Pantai Valley in Kuala Lumpur in 1958.

UM now has 12 faculties and the total enrollment is over 30,000.

The University motto, “Ilmu Punca Kemajuan” (Knowledge is the Key to Success) reflects the philosophy of the University, constantly striving for knowledge in all fields to produce successful graduates and a successful nation.

Among the 12 fakulti at the University of Malaya is the Faculty of Business and Accountancy, founded in February 1997. The faculty includes the following departments: Finance and Banking, Business Strategy and Policy, Financial Accounting and Audit, Management Accounting and Taxation, and Marketing and Information Systems.

University of Malaya (UM) was established on 8 October 1949 as a national institution of higher education to meet the needs of the Federation of Malaya and Singapore, growing out of the tradition of service to society as were previously practiced by its predecessors - the King Edward VII College of Medicine (1905) and Raffles College (1929) that were incepted to cater to the demands in the fields of medicine and education respectively.

From the humble beginning of a branch campus set up temporarily at the Kuala Lumpur Technical College in 1957, the University grew with the young new nation of Malaysia to become the nucleus for producing graduates of the highest quality and caliber, Situated on a 900 acre campus in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur, students who study at UM can easily access the institution with its close proximity to prominent landmarks in the city, some of which include the National Museum, the National Mosque, the National Art Gallery, the Planetarium, the British Council, KL Tower, Merdeka Square, and a host of other tourist attractions, all of which are within a 15 minute drive from the campus.  

Academic Strengths of  UM's  centers, faculties and institutes are well-established and well- equipped. Many of the faculties have very strong research foundations with sophisticated facilities. UM's Faculty of Medicine, Engineering and Education, to name a few, have always been benchmarks for other universities and are highly respected for the quality training and education that graduates receive.  

Recognizing that the advancement of knowledge through high quality research plays a key role in determining the progress of an institution, research is continuously engaged and fed into the University's teaching programmes in order to enable the design and delivery of its curriculum to maintain the high standards and remain both up-to-date and relevant to the needs of the industry and commerce. Research has therefore been the living force to the creation of a dynamic and stimulating educational environment in UM.  

Synonymous with prestige, UM has always been to be a premier university seeking excellence in the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and meeting the aspirations of the nation. Emulating this tradition of excellence, UM has grown from strength to strength, continuing to be at the forefront of education and research.

UM offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Bachelor Degrees as well as Master's and PhD programmes are offered in the areas of Arts, Sports Science, Built Environment & Architecture, Business & Accountancy, Computer Science & Information Technology, Dentistry, Economics & Administration, Education, Engineering, Language & Linguistics, Law, Medicine and Science.  

A wide spectrum of postgraduate courses is being offered at UM as the University intensifies its efforts in promoting and attracting international students.

Facilities

At UM, there is a University House that provides rental rooms for the college community, restaurant & cafeteria, and a conference hall.

Besides, the University also hosts numerous facilities such as the Koperasi Kedai Buku UM Berhad, a post office, indoor and outdoor recreational and sports facilities, a prayer room, an auditorium, Dewan Tunku Canselor, and an Examination Building. The University's library has a vast collection of nearly 1,3 million volumes of monographs, bound journals & manuscripts, as well as journal subscriptions.  

Computer laboratories and multimedia facilities are available and provided in all faculties, academies, and centers in UM. Meanwhile there is also a postgraduate social science institution called the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), which is dedicated to teaching and learning through networking with strategic partners and promotes collaborative research with academic as well as government and private sector institutions in order to meet the changing needs of contemporary societies.  

In addition, the International Relations Unit that was set up in 1996 is armed with the objective of transforming UM into an academic centre of excellence of international repute. Some of its main activities include coordinating international programmes and activities with other units of the university, organizing visits by international visitors to the university, liaising admission of international students under exchange programmes, and promoting cross-cultural activities to the international students.  

The concept of lifelong education is also being employed and practiced in the university with the setting-up of The University of Malaya Centre for Continuing Education (UMCCed), which caters for the development of a learning society to meet the present and future needs of the nation. Last but not least, there is also a Centre for Civilisational Dialogue (CCD) which was established with the objective of disseminating knowledge in the area of Civilisational dialogue and working towards dialogue and understanding between ethnic groups, cultures, and civilizations.  

Student Services and Activities

UM students have their own Students' Representative Council which looks after the welfare of all students and organizes various types of activities. This Council also provides a means of communication between students and the administration on issues pertaining to living and study conditions.  

One of the student services provided by UM is "Sistem Maklumat Pelojar Bersepadu" that provides information online such as names of successfully admitted candidates, their registered subject details and course fees. There is also a career and counseling service that students can make use of to seek guidance and advice, as well as student bodies that enable students to participate in various activities organized by different societies. Among the clubs and societies available on-campus to cater to a wide range of academic, religious and sporting activities, hobbies, and community service are the Chinese Language Society, International Association of Students in Economics and Business (AIESEC), Engineering Society, Amateur Film and Photography Club, Karate Club and Tamil Language Society, to name a few.  

In addition, students can also visit the various places of interest within the university. These include the Museum of Asian Art, in which UM stands as the only institution of higher learning in the country that owns a museum for research and study, as well as the Botanical Gardens or Rimba llmu (Forest of Knowledge) that was established out of a need to study and conserve the immense diversity of plant life in Malaysian rainforest.  

As for foreign students, UM also provides support to them. which includes assistance with English language, accommodation and welfare services. Students can also contact the International Relations Unit for further details. Accommodation is also available for students of UM, which offers 13 residential colleges - where 12 are on-campus and 1 is off-campus.  

Scholarships and Aid

The University provides a limited number of awards under several schemes, such as Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leader Fellowship Fund, the Fellowship Scheme, the Scholarship Scheme, the Tuanku Pro-Chancellor Scholarship, the Za'aba Research Scholarship, the Postgraduate Loan Fund as well as fee subsidies and exemptions.

Acadamic Achievements  

Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2006

The Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2006 (formerly known as the Science, Technology and Innovation Expo) was held from 23 - 25 February 2006 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur. The three-day exhibition was organized by the Malaysia Association of Research Scientists (MARS) and the Ministry of Science, Technology an*a Innovation. This annual exhibition provides a platform for the development of industrial science, technology and innovation in Malaysia.  

UM submitted a total of 44 research projects and won five gold medals. 13 silver medals and 12 bronze medals, UM also won two special awards, i.e. the Most Informative Booth Award and Most Visitor-Friendly Booth Award.

International Invention, Innovation, Industrial Design & Technology Exhibition, Malaysia (ITEX 2006)  

Twenty-seven research projects from UM participated in the 1 7th International Invention, Innovation, Industrial Design and Technology Exhibition, Malaysia (ITEX 2006) at Dewan 4 & 5, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 19-21 May 2006. In this exhibition, UM won six gold medals, eight silver medals and five bronze medals including two special awards.

Biotechnology Asia 2006

Biotechnology Asia 2006 which took place for three days from 9-11 August 2006 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) Kuala Lumpur incorporated a conference, exhibition, innovation award and seminar on education and career. It was officiated by the President of the Federation of Asian Biotechnology Association (FABA), Dr. Anwar Naseem.

At the Biotechnology Innovation Award ceremony held on the second day at the Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, PWTC, DM was announced as the winner of four gold medals, four silver medals and three bronze medals as well as one special award for the Most Informative Booth.

Seoul International Invention Fair 2006

The Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) held from 7-11 December 2006 was the largest research exhibition in Asia. SIIF is organised bi-onnually at the Pacific Hall COEX, Seoul, South Korea.  

The participants for the SIIF 2006 were from 21 countries including Bosnia-Herzegovina, China, Croatia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, Pakistan, Romania, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, USA and Vietnam.  

DM sent a team comprising 11 researchers with 11 research projects. DM was successful in winning five gold medals, four silver medals and two bronze medals.
