Multimedia University is Malaysia's first private university.
It has two campuses :
1) Cyberjaya
2) Melaka.

The distance between the two campuses are approximately 150 kilometers, via the North South Expressway.

Multimedia University (MMU) is one of the leading private universities in Malaysia with a reputation for innovative education, It all began with an invitation from the Malaysian Government to Telekom Malaysia Berhad, to establish the first private university in October 1996. Formerly known as Institute Telecommunication and Information Technology (ITTM), it served as a training base for all Telekom staff from the southern region for special training in wiring and installing telecommunication equipment. With the mandate from the government to quickly establish a university to cater to the ever-increasing number of students, renovation work was initiated to up-grade the former ITTM training base to a fully-equipped university known as Telekom University or UNITELE.

Just within three months of its operation in the historical city of Melaka, the university was again brought into the limelight when in March 1997, the government instructed UNITELE's management to set up a brand new university in the heart of Cyberjaya. Soon after, YABhg, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Hj. Mohd Ali was appointed as the Chancellor of MMU on 20 June 1997. With the Chancellor's support and equipped with sheer determination and hard work, the construction of the elegant Cyberjaya Campus was successfully completed in two years, giving rise to the eminent twin-campus of Multimedia University, the first Government- linked private university in the country that is fully ICT-based, The ninth of July, 1999 marked yet another eventful date for the university with the official launch of its Cyberjaya Campus by the former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. It also signified a heavy responsibility that encompasses the scope of ® truly world class institution - to be the catalyst for the development of the MSC as well as to produce the needed knowledge-workers for the nation, parallel to the success of Silicon Valley in the USA.

Academic Facilities &" Resources

In an era of globalization where borders become meaningless and societies become interconnected. Multimedia University constantly position itself at the forefront of the online education revolution, The result - MMU achieved the status of a fully-digital campus, where the University community enjoys online and web- based facilities. The in-house development of the Integrated Computerized Education Management System (ICE MS), has more than 70 automated functions including online registration, online exam results, online financial kiosk, online bulletin board, academic progress report and achievement. With these facilities, students are able to register for subjects online. select their class schedule as well as view their exam results and financial statements anytime, This system was designed to provide the best solution for MMU in creating a paperless environment with quality information flow throughout the campus. As the first private university to be given accreditation due to the high quality academic programmes offered, MMU uses the E-Learning Campus Interactive System (ELCIS) to facilitate the students' learning process and experience. The system provides a variety of self-accessed teaching and learning sources such as multimedia-based content (learning objects), streamed audio and video, and on-line discussions using forum and chat facilities.

Underlying the concept of "a virtual teacher within a virtual classroom", the Multimedia Learning System (MMLS) was developed in-house by the Centre for Multimedia Education Development in 1999. It is an intelligent management system which serves as a platform for the delivery of multimedia contents to its learners. Within the technological framework, MMLS is designed as an intelligent, interactive, self-paced, instructor- led, web-based teaching and learning tool. It can be customized and utilized by any establishment worldwide that is associated with learning and training activities. Learning institutions and corporate training establishments can adopt this system as an intelligent delivery tools for their content, to fully capitalize on the benefits of web-based learning. The MMLS has a built-in intelligent navigation system that assists lecturers in monitoring the students' performance more effectively and efficiently, In recognition of MMU's efforts, the MMLS was awarded the best smart learning application in the Asia Pacific MSC IT &. Telecommunications Awards (APMITTA) in 2000, defeating nine other contenders, MMU also clinched the prestigious and much coveted Asia Pacific Information and Communication Technology Award (APICTA) in 2001 for the Best of Learning Applications category, In 2004, it received the Smart Community International Network (SCIN) Best Practice Award.

Gearing towards a paperless and cashless environment, a smartcard is given to all members of its community. It is the first multi- purpose card of its kind in South East Asia, which combines financial and non-financial applications in a single card. The card, which contains more than 20 applications, provides users with conveniences ranging from financial applications such as electronic purse, ATM Card, Touch N Go, Debit Card system to non- financial applications such as access control system, library applications, time attendance system, voting system, medical applications, examination results, information kiosk, booking facilities and parking management system, besides being an identification card for students and staff.

MMU is the first university in the world to award e-Scroll and e-Transcript to its graduates. These certificates are digitally signed and stored in a CD-ROM as well as recorded on the Smart Card (microchip-based card). In addition to this, the university also provides a Registry of Graduates homepage (http://registry.mmu.edu.my) that will allow anyone in the world to verify the validity of the e-Scroll and e-Transcript. The verifier could be the student themselves, a prospective employer or other universities. With these systems in place, the university not only eliminates fraud, but also complements the e-governance system, preparing itself for a truly web-based society.

In a RM15 million collaboration project between the Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia and the Japan International Collaboration Agency, MMU is set to become a pioneer in real time and tele-education model through satellite communication. Lectures are transmitted simultaneously via the hub site located at MMU Cyberjaya campus to five remote sites located at:

• Penang Skills Development Centre

• Multimedia University, Melaka Campus

• Institute Latihan Persindustrian, Kuantan, Pahang

• Multimedia College, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

• Universiti Malaysia Sarawak

MMU now has over 20,000 students, combining all the five venues including the Cyberjaya campus, The teaching method is based on an interactive communication method whereby it is similar to attending a real time class, This will definitely benefit all MMU off-campus students, especially those pursuing semi professional diploma programmes.

One of the most important facilities for any educational institution is the library. In addition to its new library building in Melaka, Multimedia University created history by having the first academic digital library in Malaysia, thus marking its name in the Malaysian Book of Records. It is named the Siti Hasmah Digital Library and was launched on 24+h July 2000 in the Cyberjaya campus,

What makes MMU library different from the others is that it provides its facilities not only to its own community but also to the public, This was proven when MMU developed the Malaysian Theses Online (MyTO), an indexing system which manages theses from 21 public and three private universities, MMU staff and students have unlimited access to the collection of theses from all universities, Another of MMU's very own creation is a portal for public universities to disseminate information and development among PERPUN (Persidangan Perpustakaan Akademik dan Perpustakaan Negara) members and to develop a repository system that will index all research materials, These services and facilities can be utilized by MMU staff and students as PERPUN has a portal to highlight the updates. Collaboration between Telekom Malaysia and MMU to develop a Radio Frequency Identification Technology is used in MMU library to locate and monitor items for easy retrieval. With all the advanced technology prompt digital services and extensive digital and non- digital collection amounting to 110,000 books, more than 28,000 titles of E-books and 64 online resources database, it is not surprising that MMU won the Malaysia Library Website Competition in 2005 which was organized by Elsevier.

MMU also pioneers the development of the WAP information system which enables efficient information exchange between students and lecturers. Programmes are uniquely designed to prepare students to meet global challenges in IT and multimedia, thus the university is not only equipped with multimedia lecture halls, but all faculties are also equipped with sophisticated laboratories, where all the advanced computers are connected by a local network, This is evidence of MMU's effort to promote information sharing and smart learning among its students.

Every faculty in MMU has its own centre of excellence, A total of 26 Centres of Excellence provide a platform for academic staff and students to collaborate and spearhead various research and innovation projects, Without a doubt, all the faculties are unique and different in its own way but have the similar aim of developing high-quality graduates. To achieve this goal, each faculty creates a learning environment based on the unique features of an interactive learning environment, up-to- date course content and research-oriented education. A technology centre known as the Centre for Knowledge Interchange was also established within the university to enable knowledge sharing and networking among industry and education moguls, such as the prestigious Stanford University and MIT,

The administration, maintenance and optimization of all online and web-based facilities within MMU involve critical networking activities and are professionally managed by MMU's very own staff from The Centre for Information Technology Services (CITS), This is carried out by deploying the Network Management System (NMS) whereby the current health of MMU's network is constantly monitored, The centre also provides a complete range of network services such as wired and wireless networks,

The wireless network or wireless local area network (WLAN) offers wireless data connections at a speed up to 11 Mbps. Staff and students located around the main campus can enjoy this facility as the WLAN covers the main campus with acceptable reliable service that allows for "roaming", This gives users the mobility of moving around and still be connected to the network.

CITS also provides general computing resources to the public, for the purpose of the university's educational, research and administrative activities. These public computer labs are equipped with high-end computing facilities with the latest application software, and are accessible every business day from 9.00a. m. until 10.00p.m. In short, CITS serves as a backbone to MMU's network by ensuring that the network meets the immediate and future needs of the University.

With the existence of up-to-date technology in all aspects of the teaching and learning facilities provided by MMU, the university will without a doubt realize its aim of producing graduates who are kept abreast with the latest development and have the ability to innovate, contribute and lead in the new millennium. This is in tandem with the Malaysian government's call to develop a knowledge-based society.

Recognition and Achievements

In just a short span of 10 years, MMU has received an outstanding amount of RM44 million in external research and development grants, won over 130 academic awards, published 1604 international journals and earned 11 recognition awards.

As the role of private universities increases around the world, MMU plans to not only walk in step with the biggest giants of education, but to take the lead in the education industry. Amidst reports of unemployed graduates, it is worth nothing that MMU's graduates are among those least affected and the university expects that this trend will continue in the foreseeable future.

Multimedia University (MMU) is the first Government-approved private university in Malaysia, MMU plays an important role in providing world class education within the broad sphere of telecommunications, multimedia, computers, digital art, animation, information technology, software development, and management. With IT and Multimedia evolving at high speed, MMU is strategically placed within the MSC to capture and capitalize continual technology transfer from external industries, and create new inventions, innovations and technology to benefit the nation. Both MMU’s campuses are located in the multimedia hub of Cyberjaya and the historical town of Melaka, with a student population of about 20,000.

Multimedia University (MMU) was established in 1996 with the aim of producing graduates, who are kept abreast on the latest developments in the IT and Multimedia industry, and adept with the ability to innovate, contribute and lead in the new millennium. Its official launch on July 9th, 1999 by former Prime Minister, YAB Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed signignifies a heavy responsibility that encompasses the scope of a truly world class institution – to be the catalyst for the development of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) and the nation, parallel to the Silicon Valley’s success in the USA.
