Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP)
was established on January 10,
1997 when PETRONAS was invited
by the Malaysian government to set up a
university.
The campus is built on a 400 hectare
(1,000 acre) site strategically located at
Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak Darul Ridzuan,
Malaysia. The university is wholly-owned
subsidiary of PETRONAS, the national oil
company of Malaysia. UTP offers a wide range of engineering and technology programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, This is complemented with strong focus on Research and Development. The programs are designed with high industry-relevance to provide a dynamic learning environment. The university community comprises students and staff from various nationalities. The university is located in a beautifully landscaped setting, amidst the new township of Seri Iskandar. Its peaceful environment, wide open spaces and abundant lakes make it an ideal place to study • DTP is an institute of higher learning. We provide opportunities for the pursuit of knowledge and expertise for the advancement of engineering, science and technology to enhance the nation's competitiveness. • Our objective is to produce well- rounded graduates who are creative and innovative with the potential to become leaders of industry and the nation. • Our aim is to nurture creativity and innovativeness and expand the frontiers of technology and education for the betterment of society. > Recognition from Professional and Public Authorities This private university aimed to produce well-rounded graduates. Its degree programmes are accredited by the relevant authorities such as the National Accreditation Board (Lembaga Akreditasi Negara) and Engineering Accreditation Council, Board of Engineers (BEM) (for engineering degrees). Public Services Department (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam) and Institution of Chemical Engineers UK (IChemE). Its curricula are conceived with focus on industry requirements, taking into account the best practices in the academic field through its panel of experts and external examiners from local and overseas organizations. > Multiple-Mode of Academic Delivery DTP emphasizes the importance of self- driven learning where the academic staff functions as facilitators in addition to being lecturers. They apply multiple modes of learning such as team-based learning, use of multimedia, project- based assignments and independent learning. Practical experience is provided through an 8-month industrial training program which encourages students to apply what they learn and learn what is being practiced. > Broad-Based Academic Programmes The programs are also designed to balance technological competencies with other attributes including the ability to understand and communicate with the world within which these competencies will be applied. The holistic undergraduate programmes are broad-based and provide a strong foundation in the fundamentals of science and technology. This provides flexibility for students to specialize in their areas of choice during their later years of study > An International Outlook The faculty and student body comprises people from various nationalities, religions and cultural backgrounds, International benchmarking of the programmes and its delivery is carried out continuously through the appointment of external examiners from Australia, Canada, England, Japan, Hong Kong and Scotland. The University is also guided by an International Academic Advisory Council with representatives from North America, Europe and Asia. The University Campus And Its Surroundings The University's location, which is within a stretch of land from Ipoh to Lumut, is currently being developed into industrial zones. It will include an Industrial and Technological Park, Pharmaceutical Park, Educational Park and Research and Science Park. Campus & Facilities The university provides numerous sports and recreational facilities which include a gymnasium, a swimming pool, as well as game courts and fields. On-campus accommodation is also provided for every student. Meanwhile, the university's Information Resource Centre (IRC) promotes information sharing among 27 of PETRONAS' group libraries nationwide, with comprehensive collections of technical references that are mostly related to engineering, science & technology, management and languages. Other facilities available at DTP include a Media Room equipped with satellite TV channels, the Electronic Library of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers Inc that contains more than 400,000 articles in over 12,000 individual publications, the EBSCO host database that compiles scholarly and popular journals, printing services, as well as the OPAC service through the Intranet for students to browse the abundant resources in various study areas. UTP is equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and testing laboratories and> workstations for computing and simulation work. In addition to these in-house facilities, the university is also supported by other training facilities available at other subsidiaries under the PETRONAS Education Division and other PETRONAS operating units. The Computer & Information Sciences laboratories include: • Virtual Reality Laboratory • Usability Laboratory • Data Communication Laboratory Student Development Activities The Student Support Services Department organizes various cultural/ social, academic/ sports and recreational activities for its students, There are 19 clubs and societies registered in UTP that cater to the students' interest, As for international students, the International Students' Unit offers assistance to all international students in matters pertaining to welfare, immigration and visa. There are also several development programs organized to develop students' potential and skills to lead, manage, and communicate in line with the university's mission to nurture well-rounded graduates. Scholarships / Financial Aid Scholarships and study loans are offered by government educational loan institutions as well as private financial organizations. The University is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, the national oil company of Malaysia. UTP offers a wide range of engineering and technology programs at foundation, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels. The programs are designed with high industry-relevance-feature to provide a dynamic learning environment. This is complemented with strong focus on research and development. The university community comprises of students and staff from various nationalities. A total of more 4000 students currently undergoing the programs of which more than 200 are international students coming from various countries. There are more than 200 academics of which 30% are PhD holders currently serving the university. The university is positioning itself to be at par with other well-established universities Malaysia. To date, the university commitment to research is seen through its substantial investment in research equipment and facilities. Apart from actively involved in Research and Development on their own or in collaboration with researchers from other institutions, the university researchers are also taking part in R&DC expositions, as well as providing expert and technical services to local industries. The university is also gearing itself to involve heavily in industrial based research projects especially related to technology on oil, gas, transportation and intelligent system. |
