The most beautiful University Hall in Malaysia with 4,851 students for the admission 2014 and 2015 session.
The Oath-Taking ceremony saw the 4,851 newly-enrolled students taking their oath to mark the beginning of their journey with the university. The number included 100 students recruited through the Transforming Ideas into Reality programme, or Meniti, a new entry mode mechanism offering spots for those from families earning 40 per cent below the poverty line to further their studies at UMS.
Out of the 4,851 new students enrolling into UMS for the year 2014/2015, 1,992 were from Sabah, 2,295 from Peninsular Malaysia, 399 from Sarawak, and 165 international students.

UMS Museum
The Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Museum is nestled on the ground floor of the Chancellery Building
Its grandiose and contemporary setting epitomizes a decade of the University’s progress towards excellence.
Officially launched on the 25th of October, 2003, the UMS Museum was the brainchild of the first and present Vice Chancellor, Tan Sri Prof. Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Abu Hassan Othman, whose unrelenting dedication and unsurpassed contribution has seen the University through multiple stages of development.

The main entrance of the Museum is adorned by meaningful verses of a poem, “Griya Citra” that embodies the path taken by UMS in its quest towards realizing its mission as a landmark of global eminence.
The interior of the Museum is finely designed with carved wooden.
Interactive multimedia touch screens are illuminated by the complementary effect of brightly lit lights and exquisite regal red carpet.
Aesthetic arrangement of memorabilia, most noticeably the University Mace, adds to splendor and magnificence of the Museum.


 



UMS To be the first “Eco Campus”


University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) aims to be the first eco-friendly university in Malaysia by 2017 to be a fully “Eco Campus” after launching its EcoCampus Blueprint on 7th February 2013.
“It will be the first university in Malaysia to Endeavour in the EcoCampus Project based on three basic principles of Innovation, Relevant and Sustainability in line with the global shout ‘The Future We Want’ at the recent Rio+20 global conference,”
“This programme is not just about promoting awareness to preserve our nature or encourage cleanliness, but it is about how we minimize the pollution and promote our nature tourism.

“We want to capitalize these assets that we have around us, all the land, trees, sea and river,” he said.

UMS is committed to implement the elements contained in the Ecocampus blueprint to achieve the target to become a leading higher learning institution (IPT) model in preserving the environment.

UMS is blessed with abundant of flora and fauna, UMS is currently in the phase of being a reference center that acts as the guardian of the environment as well as to contribute to global efforts towards environmental excellence, research, management and operations in the future


The EcoCampus Blueprint would increase the awareness amongst the global community towards sustainable development.

UMS has more than 17,000 students and 2,000 staff, this EcoCampus would give a great positive impact towards the environment, economy and society in Asia.

EcoCampus enables universities to systematically identify, evaluate, manage and improve their environmental performance and practices.

The programme would also benchmark environmental improvement by external audit whether an institution has attained a certain level of environmental performance.

The five elements in the Ecocampus blueprint consists of :
1) Sustainable development,
2) Ecology protection,
3) Environmental compatibility,
4) Resource conservation and
5) Environmental monitoring.


Apart from supporting the ecocampus programme, UMS also practice other concept of sustainability such as :
1) energy conservation (eco-energy),
2) eco-space,
3) eco-building and
4) reduce the usage of plastic bag.

The world is facing very serious issues of species’ extinction, land degradation and pollutions caused by humans.

The higher learning institutions are not only acts as a knowledge centre for the society but also as a medium to promote environmental awareness and address the solutions for these problems.

Established only in 1995 UMS is one of Malaysian government’s efforts towards meeting the need of competent human knowledge economy. One of the primary concerns of UMS is to develop a world-class quality education system that meets the demands and requirements of the new century.
The beginning of UMS started in 1995 with very limited resources. UMS faculty exchange programs are to gain first hand experience. UMS believes that study abroad is necessary for her faculty members and administrative staff to become globally competent. In that respect, UMS tutors in particular are encourage to do their masters program abroad.
UMS has sent hundreds of tutors abroad. Besides local Institution of higher Learning other favorite destination are countries such as Japan, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Large proportion of these tutors and junior lecturers undertake their masters and doctorate degrees in the United Kingdom.

A state-of-the-art Aquarium & Marine Museum in Universiti Malaysia Sabah campus.

Established in 1995 by Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) to promote education, research and training in conservation and sustainable development of marine resources.

Situated within the Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) Complex adjunction to the Sepanggar Bay area, this aquarium and museum boasts one of the best aquarium facilities on the Borneo Island.

Among its facilities are :
1) free standing exhibition tanks,
2) live open water reef exhibition centre,
3) live shallow reef exhibition centre,
4) mangrove walk,
5) contemporary Marine and Maritime Museum,
6) Multimedia Interactive Information Kiosk,
7) Sipadan deep dive diorama.
There is a skeleton of a Cuvier’s Beaked Whale in the Marine Museum. Cuvier's Beaked Whale are dark grey, others a reddish-brown. Cuvier’s Beaked Whale can grow up to about seven meters in length and weighs 2-3 metric tons. They can live up to forty years.

First foreigner to get PhD from UMS
Dr Zelzy Shahar Al-Johary, 45, who was a lecturer from Universiti Brunei Darrusalam (UBD) in Brunei, became the first foreigner to attain the doctorate from UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA SABAH (UMS) during the convocation's first session in October 2012
"Like other countries, I felt that Brunei was also going through a transformation in its education sector and thought it was time to research on the relevant programmes for teachers in my country," Dr Zelzy Shahar Al-Johary

UMS is one of the most beautiful public university in Malaysia.
Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was established on 24 November 1994. His Royal Highness the Yang di Pertuan Agong proclaimed the establishment of UMS under Section 6(1) of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971. The ninth public university in Malaysia expanded rapidly since its inception. The physical development of the permanent campus on a 999 acre piece of land began in August 1995. The University's occupation of the permanent campus started in 1999 and was completed in 2000. In that same year, a branch campus was established in Labuan Island placing two Schools concentrating on International Offshore Banking and E- Commerce. In addition, UMS has three centres of excellence to support teaching, learning and research in the university such as Tropical Biology and Conservation Research Institute, Borneo Marine Research Institute and Biotechnology Research Institute. The Centre for The Promotion of Knowledge and Language Learning was also established to support teaching, learning and research in the University. Today, UMS is proud of its 13 Schools that offer 63 degree programmes, with a total enrolment of more than 12,000 students.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has a plan to build a RM120 million branch campus in Sandakan to cater for the need to expand higher learning education in the East Coast.
The off campus programme of UMS in Sandakan was started in 1996 by renting a building that belonged to Sabah Forestry Education Institute (formerly Sabah Forestry Training Institute). Under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) the Sabah Government agreed to build the School of Agriculture facility in Sandakan that include hostels, a library, lecture halls and IT facilities.
The School of Agriculture, he said, would have three branches of studies, namely Livestock Production, Crop Production and Horticulture and Landscape.
UMS is also built new branches in other parts of Sabah such as Tawau similar to its branch in Labuan.
 



PPRL Banggi Seaweed Development Project
 


PPRL Banggi Seaweed Development Project was established in 1999 and managed by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). The development activities carried out by UMS include :
a) Introducing seaweed culture to Banggi Islands
b) Identifying ideal seaweed culture area and Carrying out research and development on culture technique and disease
d) Commercialization and marketing of seaweed


 


Bornean Wild Cat and Clouded Leopard Project
Bornean Wild Cat and Clouded Leopard Project

A collaborative effort between the Global Canopy Programme and University Malaysia Sabah, aims to assist the conservation of five species of wild cat found on Borneo. The project will gather baseline information regarding the ecology of these felids, increase awareness of wild cats in Sabah, Malaysia,
and build capacity for mammal field research in Malaysia.
