| March 06, 2010 23:19 PM Scholarship Scheme For Outstanding MARA Students - Shafie BANGI, March 6 (Bernama) -- Students who obtain cumulative grade points average (CGPA) of 4.0 each semester will no longer have to pay back their Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) loans effective this year. Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said this was an incentive to MARA students to be more excellent in their respective fields. "This is one of the incentive programmes at the MARA level specifically for students who are successful in the disciplines they are pursuing," he said at a press conference after a gathering between the Ministry and Mara-sponsored students 2010, here Saturday. He said that for the whole of 2009, about 10 Mara students achieved 4.0 in their CGPA. He said this incentive was open to all MARA-sponsored students in local and foreign universities. The minister said MARA had also taken the initiative to implement the Excellent Scientists Programme (ESP) in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) to churn out graduates with professional status obtaining the highest degree before the age of 30. This initiative covers the preparation stage, first degree, Master of Science degree and subsequently the Doctor of Philosophy. "We want to see that the disciplines they are pursuing are based on our country's requirement as well as the sectors which are in line with the New Economic Model that we want to achieve," he said. -- BERNAMA |
