SMK Abaka School was established in January 1962.
The school is 20 miles from Tawau Town.
This school began as a primary school with teaching staff of 20 and students reaching 250.
The early school buildings concrete and wood were the relics of those Japanese and British time.
In October 1997, administrative offices and several classrooms were destroyed in a fire due to short circuit
AT the initiative of the principals, several additional Buildings were erected around the original site.
Buildings fund also came from the Department of Education and the Chua Soon Bui, Tawau MP at the time.
BAL States also contributed to build the principal house, houses for teachers and school staff.
In 1998, the old principal house was demolished because of the concern of no longer safe to use.
And Golden Hope replaced the principal's house with a new house.
From 1962 to 1996, the school only accommodates students of lower secondary level i.e. from Form 1 to Form 3.
Since 1996, the school offers students at the upper secondary level of Form 4 and Form 5.

 'Preserving and Restoring the Natural Environment'
SMK Abaka plays an exemplary role in greening and creating beautiful gardens in the school in line with the 'School In A Garden' concept launched by the Ministry Of Education.
School students devote much of their time and energy to maintaining their spectacular gardens. Some commercial firms also sponsors plants for their gardens.
