Introduction | 简介

Celosia is a genus of about 45 species of striking herbaceous annuals and perennials in the Amaranthaceae family. Commonly known as cockscomb or woolflowers, they are native to Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Their blooms are either feathery (plumosa) or crested (cristata), often compared to flames or velvet-like coral, and they thrive best under full tropical sun.

Ecological Context |

In Tawau's hot and humid climate, Celosia argentea flourishes easily. It is both an ornamental plant - brightening gardens with its velvety red, pink, and yellow blooms - and a resilient weed, sprouting in unexpected corners of farmland and roadside verges.

In 2018, Celosia argentea grew abundantly as a wild flower around the squatter farms beside the football field at Jalan Kuhara, Tawau. Its presence was so common that the area seemed painted in shades of pink and red, a natural decoration for the community.

By 2022, however, the football field was redeveloped and opened to the public. With the land cleared and managed, the once-thriving Celosia argentea became rare in that same area. Leaving only memories of the "wild velvet flames" that once danced along the edges of the field.
