All the open air coffee shops in Sabah have one or more food stalls that serve hot foods. Almost all the Kedai Kopi coffee shops do not serve alcoholic drinks. For this you need to go to a bar that has a license to serve alcoholic drinks to the public.

The different between a Kedai Kopi/Makanan (Food Shop or Coffee Shop) and a Restaurant is Food Shop do not have air-conditioning and frequent by SMOKERS. While a restaurant is a non-smoking area with air-conditioning.

What the local used to say RESTAURANT! RESTAURANT! are in fact the Kedai Kopi coffee shops. In Indonesia, they call Warung.

Kedai Kopi coffee shop has traditionally since historical time a public gathering place for smokers. They come here to drink their daily coffee, eat their favorite foods, gossip and SMOKE CIGARETTES. Finally this has changed! In 2019 the new government declared coffee shops and restaurants as NON SMOKING public area.

2019's ban on smoking at all eateries, now Malaysia is in peer with neighbors Singapore, Thailand and parts of Philippines in carry out the smoking laws and regulations.
