Kinarut Town
20km south of Kota Kinabalu City
is one of the train stops along the Railway
Kinarut town has two old wooden shop houses which architectural styles dated
back to the early 20th century.
The town flourished as a result of the world's demand for rubber and the
subsequent construction of the North Borneo railway line by the British.
In its glory days, the Kinarut Rubber Estate established during 1910-1911 was
the biggest rubber estate on the west coast division of North Borneo, after
Sapong Estate.
These weather-worn, dilapidated shop houses in Kinarut town are no longer
inhabited by their original Chinese families. Most of the shop lots are
currently sub-divided and rented out to small business owners of various
ethnicities.
Kinarut town is 20 kilometers south of Kota Kinabalu, it is
one of the stops for the North Borneo Railway.
The popular tourist destinations in Kinarut is the Kindawan Horse Riding Centre

1,200 Gaya islanders to relocate to Kinarut
Thursday, September 25, 2014
About 1,200 people at Pulau Gaya will be affected by a government plan to
develop the island and will be relocated to a 20-acre area at Kg Gusi, Kinarut.
These local islanders will be resettled in five-storey apartment-style housing
that is being built in the village.
The housing project, which is one of the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC)
projects, is funded by the Federal Government. A 20-acre land in Kg Gusi has
been identified as the site for the housing project that is expected to be
completed end of 2015. Once the first phase is completed, the second phase
involving the construction of 940 units would kick off and several public
facilities like a hall and a mosque would be built.
"We carried out a study on the island since 2011 and identified about 1,200 islanders are locals who would be affected by the Government's plan to develop the island.....Hence, these islanders will be relocated and resettled in Kinarut whereby a housing project under the Federal Government costing RM57 million in the first phase will see the construction of 420 units,"
