Tanjung Aru Beach is located at the end of Jalan Mat Salleh 6 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu City.

Taking its name from the casuarinas (aru) trees that fringe the fine sands, this is where one might get a ringside seat to the greatest sunset on earth every evening when the crimson sun dips slowly into the horizon, leaving the vast skies a brilliant red..

Food stalls serving local food and drinks are open till late at night. Enjoy coconut and sugarcane juice, chicken or beef satay and steamed peanuts and corn, or indulge in a full-course dinner at the seafood restaurant located there.

Lok Kawi township is located around the border of the districts of Penampang and Papar, and 15 kilometers south of  Kota Kinabalu City.

It also features one of the few Hindu temples in Kota Kinabalu, the Sri Subramaniyar Temple.

This once small town has become part of the urban expanse of Kota Kinabalu.  Today  Lok Kawi now features a small industrial estate as well a modern residential development.

It is also the site for the Lok Kawi Army Camp (Kem Tentera Lok Kawi) and the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park.

Nearby towns include Putatan in the north, and Kinarut in the south. Lok Kawi also has a water village the Kampong Meruntum.

Kuala Penyu is a small seaside town on the Klias Peninsula about 130 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu. It is one of the gateways to Pulau Tiga (Survivor Island).

The bridge was completed in March, 2012. With the new bridge, the distance from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Penyu is about 100km. The old alternative route via Beaufort is 130km.

The new Sitompok Bridge over Sitompok River cost RM60 million is a boon for the 23,000 people, most of them farmers and fishermen.

Prominent view from the air is the SMK Pekan Kuala Penyu completed in 2006-2007.

An island located off Sepanggar Bay.

On the East side of the island is a small community.

The island is easily seen from the city centre and from Likas Bay.

The islands has two main peaks covered with thick tropical rainforest. This island is can be accessed by the jetty near the city centre or from Sepanggar Bay, near the navy base.

This island, however, is not really visited by tourists but mostly fishermen stay here. This island is known to be where several World War II bombs have been found.

In Kota Kinabalu, the Suluks refugees were housed in Pulau Gaya, an island only 15-minute boat ride from Kota Kinabalu waterfront.
The stilted homes of the refugees on the island are an eyesore for most Sabahans.

Pulau Gaya as a bulk of the illegal immigrants come from Philippines and Indonesia – is the symbol of Sabah’s longstanding illegal migrant problem.
