The Wong Family History

Origins and Early Life

The patriarch, Wong Fook Yee, was born in 1953 in Sabah, Malaysia, and the matriarch, Shirley Claveria, was born in 1968 in Baguio, Philippines. Despite their distinct backgrounds, fate brought them together in Hong Kong, where they both worked—Wong between 1987 and 1993 and Shirley between 1989 and 1993. During their time on Cheung Chau Island, they crossed paths, forged a bond, and eventually married in 1993 at the Marriage Registration Office of Hong Kong.

International Ventures and Family Growth

Shortly after their marriage, Wong and Shirley moved to Paraguay, South America, in September 1993, where Wong took up a position as Wood Production Supervisor for a Taiwanese company. During their time in Paraguay, the couple welcomed their son, Wong Chun Xing, who was born in 1994 and initially held Paraguayan citizenship. In 1997, Wong and Shirley decided to return to Sabah, Malaysia, arriving on January 1, 1998, where Wong transitioned into a new role as a Computer Technician in a plywood factory. Chun Xing later relinquished his Paraguayan citizenship in 2007 in favor of his Malaysian nationality, following his father’s status.

Their family continued to grow when their daughter, Wong Mei Yin, was born in 2002 in Sabah.

A Multilingual and Culturally Diverse Family

The Wong family embodies remarkable linguistic diversity, collectively fluent in five national languagesEnglish, Chinese, Malay, Spanish, and Tagalog—as well as proficient in three local dialects:

  • Hakka (China)
  • Pangasinan (Philippines)
  • Dusun (Malaysia)

This linguistic and cultural adaptability underscores their global perspective and ability to connect with diverse communities.

Education and Professional Paths

Continuing the tradition of perseverance and ambition, Wong Chun Xing pursued higher education at University Malaysia Sabah, where he successfully graduated. He now works as a Wildlife Tour Organizer, contributing to eco-tourism and conservation efforts.

Meanwhile, Wong Mei Yin is in her final year of Social Science studies at University Malaysia Sabah, preparing for her future endeavors.
