“The brothers are believed to have been
involved in four kidnapping incidents, with the last
involving the shooting dead of a marine policeman and
kidnapping of another policeman on July 12, 2014”
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin
Abd Rahman told reporters in Semporna on Saturday August 23,
2014
Police have identified the three Muktadil brothers as the key
suspects in a series of cross border kidnappings and murders in
Sabah’s east coast.
The three brothers are :
1- Nilson Muktadil, in his 30s
2- Badong, in his 40s
3- Unidentified
The trio are believed to have entered into Semporna as illegal
immigrants and were probably testing out the strength of the
security forces which intercepted them between Tanjung Sirangol and
Pulau Maiga on Thursday August 21, 2014. The group, however, managed
to escape Malaysian security forces.
The brothers were part of the southern Philippines Tawi Tawi
island-based kidnap-for-ransom group that made forays into east
coast waters to kidnap victims for ransom.
Nilson had lived in Kg Bangau-Bangau and was believed to be involved
in the April 2, 2014 kidnapping of Chinese tourist, Gao Huayun, 29,
and Filipino worker Marcy Darawan, 40 from the Singamata Reef Resort
off Semporna.

Muktadir, the father, was a notorious pirate before his death in
the late 1990s.
Muktadir terrorized the Sulu and Celebes seas separating Sabah and
the southern Philippines.
His five sons, known as the “Muktadir brothers”, are part of a
well-armed family of kidnappers.
Malaysian security forces are hunting them down as they believe the
brothers are behind the last four cross-border kidnappings in the
east coast of Sabah since November, 2013.

“The duty of looking after the state’s security must be
borne by all, including resort operators, caged fish
entrepreneurs and society.
“We must know that kidnappings on the east coast of Sabah
had taken place since the 1970s.
“So, it is not fair if we only blame ESSCom because before
it was set up in April last year, kidnapping incidents here
had already taken place,” said Mohd Shafie, who is also
Semporna member of parliament.
“The most important thing is how to overcome it
(kidnapping). I also warn the community especially the
Semporna residents do unite and merge their energies to
combat piracy via certain methods and knowledge.
“I also hope the village security and development committees
(JKKKs), village heads and even the villagers to become a
forward base in maintaining security,”
