8.0 km from Tawau town
The new 1 million ringgit investment of tourist attraction of Tawau
Before 2010 Tawau hot springs in Kampung Air Panas was a
spot in a pitiful sight with the presence of thick undergrowth and
puddles of water on the ground.
Thought the hot springs there could have numbered about 100 spring heads
but these hot spring water sources were spread all over the place
including the stream banks as well as in the stream itself. In those
days The only evidence of these hot springs was the existence of hot air
bubbles and froth on the water surface.
Even among the Tawau folks themselves, not many were aware over the
existence of the hot springs, further compounding the area’s neglect. At
that time, there were only a handful of visitors even though on the
weekend or public holiday.
Since 2010 that scenario is no more as the hot springs have been given a
face lift by private sector.
A private company moved in and developed the Tawau Hot Springs into a
tourist place now known as the ‘Taman Rekreasi Air Panas’(Hot Springs
Recreational Park).
Today, visitors arrive at the park’s entrance are greeted by the
beautiful landscape where the foliage of shrubs at the park was trimmed
and ‘carved’ to form the words ‘1Malaysia’ and ‘Hotspring’.
Development of the park spread over 16.2 hectares begins February 2009
with an investment of RM1.0 million for the make over of this place in
order to draw the tourists.
The park was opened to the public in June 2010.
This new relational park’s developer is Rekobumi Sdn Bhd with Soon Ten
Fook as the general manager.
The park enable the tourists to have a recreational spot particularly
for the weekend.
Among the attractions at the Hot Springs Recreational Park are several
pools for the visitors, either for bathing or simply soaking their feet.
The pools have water of varying temperatures, from 30 degrees to 60
degrees Celsius and are suitable for both adults and children alike. The
water is believed to be good for health as well as for the skin.
Apart from having hot water baths, the visitors can also enjoy fresh air
from the nearby jungle that are rich with tropical trees apart from
viewing the beautiful flower trees at the park.
There is a jogging track with 20 huts along the track for the visitors
to rest.
Visitors who wish to stay overnight at the park, there are chalets
available. The park’s operator also offers facilities for the staging of
seminars, forums and other functions.
For this purpose, the developer has plans to build a hall that can
accommodate 400 people at any particular time.
Other amenities such as toilets, canteen and restaurant are available.
For the Muslim visitors, there is a prayer room available.
The bird house has various avian species.
The park planned to be included in the Sabah Tourism Corporation map,
making it one of the tourism destinations in Tawau.

The two sun bears of Hot Springs Recreational Park were released back to jungle in 2015
“THS was only interested in keeping the bears to draw
the crowds to its centre, while neglecting their needs and
welfare....When it could not withstand criticisms any more, its best
option was to release them to die at their own pace...THS should be held
accountable for simply releasing the two bears into the wild without any
rehabilitation or seeking the advice of the Sabah Wildlife Department
prior to the release,” said SAM’s president S.M. Mohamed Idris in a
press release on 2016-01-11

“We started to develop the park, spread over 16.2
hectares in February 2009. We invested almost RM1.0 million for the make
over of this place in order to draw the tourists. If everything proceed
well, the park will be opened to the public in June 2010”

Tawau Hot Spring facelift brings in more visitors
The Tawau Hot Spring Recreational Park has been getting more visitors
after undergoing a major facelift.
The hot spring, located about 8km from here, had been developed further,
making it among the favourite destinations of local and foreign
tourists.
It was first developed five years ago by a private company, Rekobumi Sdn
Bhd, at a cost of RM1mil. It became fully operational two years later.
Its director Datuk Soon Ten Fook said the takeover of the hot spring’s
management was done after realising its potential as a tourism product
and to preserve it for future generations.
Visitors comprise regulars and transit travellers, with some being
foreigners
The hot spring, which was once likened to an abandoned hot pond, was
officially named Tawau Hot Spring Park three years ago.
“We cannot underestimate its potential because after getting the major
facelift, the number of visitors is increasing steadily, especially
during the school and public holidays,” he said.
The park will be developed further. Among its long-term plans are to
accommodate various species of wild animals to attract visitors.
At present, the park also houses a variety of wild animals like the
crocodile, leopard, bear and cats imported from China.
