The International Medical University began in 1992 as the International Medical College (IMC), Malaysia's first private medical college. The IMC was granted university status in 1999 and became the International Medical University (IMU). The university remained true to key elements of the IMC vision, which are to widen access to professional healthcare education, and to use innovative, integrated and student-centred approach in providing education. The university offers degree courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Nutrition & Dietetics, Medical Biotechnology, Psychology, Biomedical Science and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and in establishing research as a core activity, together with development of postgraduate research Master's and PhD programmes. Recently, the Bachelor of Nursing Science (Hons) was introduced solely for registered nurses who wish to upgrade their professional qualification to degree level. The IMU is planning to introduce courses in Chiropractic and Chinese Medicine in the near future. THE INTERNATIONAL Medical University (IMU) welcomed its first intake of students for its undergraduate chiropractic degree programme on Feb 22, 2010. A total of twenty- nine students registered for this programme on that day. For the chiropractic programme, students have the option to study the entire programme in IMU or study part of their programme in IMU and then transfer to RMIT University in Australia. "We are very proud to have established the first and only complete Chiropractic educational programme in Malaysia, as well as in all of Southeast Asia. We believe with the addition of this programme, the university will be able to contribute to the much needed growth of the chiropractic profession in Malaysia. Above all, we want to reach out not only to local students but also international students. This first cohort of chiropractic students is enrolling on the same day as the medical and dentistry students,5? said Tan Sri Dato5 Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman, president of IMU. On this special day, chiropractors who are practicing in Malaysia were also present at the event. There was also a talk on the types of conditions chiropractors treat by one of the chiropractors, Dr Thomas Ong. '^Based on a growing need for chiropractic professionals and an expected growth in the job market, the IMU is now expanding with the introduction of its chiropractic programme. Introduced after a careful study of the employment market and the aspirations of current students, this degree programme is very innovative and is an exciting one for IMU. The programme which was approved by MQA or the Malaysian Qualifications Agency in 2009) has already attracted a great deal of interest and applications had been steadily arriving for this intake of students. It is very encouraging to see the initial enthusiasm for the course from the profession and the public/5 said Prof Peter Pook, Deputy Executive Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health. Tan Sri added, "The introduction of this programme is a great development for our university, reflecting our commitment to meet the needs of healthcare professionals in our region. This degree will significantly enhance the programmes offered in the university, both academically and in terms of student life, giving students a more holistic view. This is a wonderful opportunity of placing chiropractic education firmly within an established university framework in Malaysia. The IMU Chiropractic programme is a full-time four-year undergraduate programme designed to prepare the student for success as a chiropractic physician at an international level, in accordance with the Councils on Chiropractic Education International. The programme leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Chiropractic, followed by a one-year horsemanship. Graduates of the programme will become well-versed in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of human conditions, with special emphasis on the musculoskeletal system, including the spine. "I choose to study the chiropractic programme because this course is new and unique. Besides that, there are only a few chiropractors in Malaysia, so the profession is in great demand,55 said one of the students who enrolled in the chiropractic course today and wishes to remain, anonymous. Another student, Yang Swee Chiang, had chosen to study this course as he feels that it is new in the field of health sciences programmes. The IMU Chiropractic programme is positioned within a medical university which has many mutual advantages. It allows easier sharing of ideas and resources and a greater understanding by staff and students of the contributions made by chiropractic, medicine and other health sciences to a person's overall wellbeing. The IMU also offers undergraduate degree programmes in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, pharmaceutical chemistry, nursing, nursing science, nutrition and dietetics, psychology and biomedical science, medical biotechnology, chiropractic, Chinese medicine as well as postgraduate degrees by research (MSc and PhD) in Medical Sciences or Community Health. Credit transfer options to the University of Strathclyde, University of Newcastle, University of Queensland, and University of Otago are available for Pharmacy and Health Science Programmes.
